Great Sand Dunes Climate Month by Month

At 8,000 feet, sunlight is intense year-round. It warms things up quickly during the day, but that heat disappears just as quickly after sunset. Precipitation is modest, except in July and August, when monsoon moisture moving up from New Mexico triggers thunderstorms almost every afternoon.

February 16°F 43°F ~0.3 in

Is Great Sand Dunes Cold? Records and Extremes

The cold can surprise even seasoned travelers. At 8,000 feet, July nights average around 52°F. January nights drop to about 10°F, and during polar fronts, temperatures approach or fall below -4°F.

On the other hand, UV radiation is high at this elevation year-round. Sunburn can set in within 30 minutes, even under lightly overcast skies. The combination of elevation, dry air, and intense sunlight catches many visitors off guard, including in fall and spring.

What to Wear for a Visit to Great Sand Dunes

Here are a few rules that apply in every season:

Summer, especially July and August: Wear a lightweight T-shirt for a morning outing, but pack a windbreaker for the walk back if the wind picks up. Closed-toe shoes with thick soles are essential because heat from the sand quickly comes through thin soles. Bring a wide-brimmed hat, category 3 or 4 sunglasses, and SPF 50 sunscreen. Plan on at least 2 liters of water per person for a trip onto the dunes.

Spring and fall: Dress in layers. Use a lightweight base layer, fleece, and waterproof windbreaker. Wind can make the ridges feel twice as cold within minutes.

Winter: Bring a warm coat, hat, gloves, and waterproof shoes. If you're climbing high, pack gaiters to keep sand or snow from getting into your shoes.

Alerts and Conditions to Watch

Three phenomena deserve special attention at Great Sand Dunes.

Monsoon lightning, July and August: The dunes are a flat, exposed area with no natural shelter for miles. As soon as you hear thunder, head back down. Isolated trees on the slopes also attract lightning, so don't seek shelter under them.

Snowy roads in winter: CO 150 may be closed or impassable for several days in a row. Check the NPS conditions dashboard before leaving Alamosa or Blanca.

Spring sandstorms: Gusts over 37 mph aren't unusual in March and April. They reduce visibility and can damage camera lenses. Protect your eyes with well-fitting glasses.

Frequently Asked Questions

How hot does the sand get at Great Sand Dunes?

The sand surface at Great Sand Dunes can reach 160°F in full July sun. That's hot enough to cause burns, so wear closed-toe shoes with thick soles, and avoid putting your hands on the sand or sitting a child on it in the middle of the day.

What are temperatures like in the Great Sand Dunes desert?

The San Luis Valley is semi-arid, but it isn't a hot desert. Daytime temperatures rarely exceed 86°F because of the elevation. What surprises visitors most is the contrast between the sand surface, up to 158°F in summer, and the surrounding air. Winter cold can be biting.
