Where to Fly: Which Airport for Great Sand Dunes

Alamosa Regional Airport (ALS)

Alamosa Municipal Airport is the closest to the park (25 miles, 35 minutes). But service is limited, seasonal, and restricted to domestic connections from Denver. In practice, it's really only an option for private or charter flights. If you're traveling from France, it isn't a realistic choice.

The Major Hubs: Denver, Colorado Springs, and Albuquerque

Denver International Airport (DEN) is the natural hub for Great Sand Dunes. It offers nonstop flights from Paris and easy connections from all the major French cities through a U.S. hub. From the terminal, take US-285 south and plan on 3 hours 45 minutes to 4 hours of driving.

Colorado Springs Airport (COS) cuts the drive by about 20 minutes, to roughly 3 hours. It has fewer international flights, but it's a good option if you're connecting through a U.S. hub.

Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ), in neighboring New Mexico, works well for a road trip that combines New Mexico and Colorado. Plan on 3.5 to 4 hours by heading north on US-285.

Getting to Great Sand Dunes from France

The standard route from Paris is a nonstop Paris-CDG to Denver (DEN) flight, lasting about 10 hours. Air France and United Airlines operate this route. From Lyon, Bordeaux, or Marseille, you'll add a connection, usually in Paris or through a U.S. hub such as New York, Houston, or Atlanta.

Once you're on the ground, the route is straightforward: take US-285 south from Denver to Alamosa, then CO 150 north to the end of the road. CO 150 ends at the park.

As for the time difference, Colorado is UTC-7 in summer, 7 hours behind mainland France. Spending a night in Denver or Alamosa before tackling the dunes is often the wisest choice. For the overall trip budget, our Rates & Passes page covers entrance fees and passes.

By Car: Distances and Drive Times from Gateway Towns

A car is the only practical way to reach Great Sand Dunes. Here are the key figures from the main gateway towns:

Starting point Approximate distance Estimated drive time
Alamosa (CO) 25 miles 35 min
Pueblo (CO) 106 miles 2 hr 15 min
Colorado Springs (CO) 152 miles 3 hr
Santa Fe (NM) 180 miles 3 hr
Denver (CO) 174 miles 3 hr 45 min
Albuquerque (NM) 221 miles 3 hr 45 min

From the south, take US-160 to its junction with CO 150, then head north to the end of the road. From the west (Grand Junction, Durango), take CO 17 south to Lane 6, then follow CO 150 east.

In winter, check the Colorado Department of Transportation's website for CO 150 conditions before you leave. Conditions change quickly at 7,900 feet, and the road can be icy.

The Park Entrance

Great Sand Dunes has just one main entrance, on northern CO 150. It provides access to the Dunes Parking Lot, the Visitor Center, and Piñon Flats Campground. There's no secondary paved entrance.

The park is open 24/7 year-round. Admission is $25 per vehicle ($20 for a motorcycle, or $15 per person for noncommercial groups). If you arrive when the fee station is closed, you can pay on-site at an iron ranger. Failing to pay is a violation. Our Rates & Passes page covers available passes, including the America the Beautiful pass.

Once You Arrive: Parking

The Dunes Parking Lot is where you park to reach the dunes on foot. During the busy season, from mid-June to mid-August, it fills up between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Arrive before 9 a.m. or after 4 p.m. to avoid the wait. For everything involving roads, unpaved routes, and parking inside the park, the Getting Around Great Sand Dunes guide brings together the practical details.

Other Options: Tours and Public Transportation

There's no public transportation between Denver, or any other city, and Great Sand Dunes. Greyhound buses serve Alamosa, but you'll still need a vehicle for the remaining 25 miles.

A few tour operators offer minibus trips from Denver or Colorado Springs, usually as day trips. This works if you want to avoid renting a car, but the schedule is fixed and you'll miss access to the dunes at dawn. Our Itinerary & Timing guide explains why spending a night nearby completely changes the experience.

In Summary: The Best Route Based on Your Starting Point

From France: fly to Denver (DEN), rent a car at the airport, and drive 4 hours straight south on US-285. Consider spending your first night in Alamosa so you can enter the park rested in the morning.

From Denver or Colorado Springs: leave by car at 6 or 7 a.m. and arrive at the Dunes Parking Lot before 9:30 a.m. for a full day in the park. Our Where to Stay guide lists your options if you're staying overnight.

From Albuquerque or Santa Fe: head north on US-285. It's a good connection for a loop road trip through New Mexico and Colorado.
