Getting to Kobuk Valley: Airports, Access, and Transportation

By Erika Müller · Data: National Park Service · ← Complete guide Kobuk Valley

Kobuk Valley is one of the most remote national parks in the United States, with no roads leading into it. The only way in is by air, in two stages. First, take a commercial flight to a gateway town, either Kotzebue or Bettles. From there, charter an air taxi to a sandbar along the Kobuk River. The main airport is Kotzebue's Ralph Wien Memorial Airport (OTZ), about a 45-minute flight from the park's usual landing areas. From France, plan on at least two days of travel.

Where to Land: Which Airport Serves Kobuk Valley?

Two gateway towns provide access to the park. They're not interchangeable, and your choice depends on your U.S. arrival hub.

Kotzebue (OTZ): The Main Gateway

Kotzebue, a small coastal town in northwestern Alaska, is the busier base. It's home to the Northwest Arctic Heritage Center, the only official visitor center for Kobuk Valley. That's where you'll get current weather conditions, safety advice, and permits if you need them. Ralph Wien Memorial Airport (OTZ) receives regional flights from Anchorage, about a 1.5-hour flight away. No international flights land directly in Kotzebue.

Bettles (BTT): The Northeastern Gateway

Bettles is a practical alternative if you're arriving through Fairbanks. Regional flights connect Fairbanks and Bettles in about an hour. This is the most convenient option for reaching the central and eastern parts of the park. Seats are limited, so book early.

International Hubs: Anchorage and Fairbanks

There are two entry points from abroad:

  • Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC): Alaska's main hub, with service from Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Minneapolis, and other U.S. cities. The natural starting point for Kotzebue.
  • Fairbanks International Airport (FAI): A secondary hub with service, notably, from Seattle. The natural starting point for Bettles.

Getting to Kobuk Valley from France

There are no direct flights from Paris to Anchorage. The journey takes three legs.

Leg 1. Paris CDG, or Lyon, Bordeaux, or Marseille with a connection, to a U.S. hub. Seattle (SEA) is the fastest connection to Anchorage, with about 9 hours of flying time. Los Angeles (LAX) and San Francisco (SFO) work as well.

Leg 2. A U.S. hub to Anchorage, about 3.5 hours from Seattle, or to Fairbanks. Allow at least 2 to 3 hours in Seattle for U.S. customs formalities.

Leg 3. Anchorage to Kotzebue, about 1.5 hours, or Fairbanks to Bettles, about 1 hour. These regional flights often sell out as early as June, so book them at the same time as your transatlantic flight.

Total travel time from Paris runs 22 to 28 hours, depending on connections. We recommend spending one night in Kotzebue or Bettles before heading out, so you can recover and check the local weather. See our Where to Stay guide for lodging options in both gateway towns.

Getting There from U.S. Cities

Departure city Connecting point Gateway town Approximate flight time
Seattle (SEA) Anchorage (ANC) Kotzebue (OTZ) ~5 hours total
Los Angeles (LAX) Anchorage (ANC) Kotzebue (OTZ) ~7.5 hours total
San Francisco (SFO) Anchorage (ANC) Kotzebue (OTZ) ~6.5 hours total
Fairbanks (FAI) (direct) Bettles (BTT) ~1 hour
Anchorage (ANC) (direct) Kotzebue (OTZ) ~1.5 hours

There are no roads into the park itself. If you're already in Fairbanks and are considering driving to Bettles, keep in mind that the route is gravel, conditions vary considerably by season, and weather can make it impassable. The regional flight remains the most reliable option.

The Air Taxi: The Park's Only Entrance

From Kotzebue or Bettles, you reach the park by chartered air taxi. No scheduled flights serve the interior of Kobuk Valley. Local operators fly small aircraft, such as Cessnas and Pipers, to landing areas on sandbars along the Kobuk River. Flight time is 30 to 60 minutes, depending on where you're being dropped off.

Here are four practical things to know before you book:

  • Book your air taxi before you arrive in Alaska. Aircraft and available time slots are limited, especially in July and August.
  • Give the operator an accurate baggage weight. Small aircraft calculate their payload down to the kilogram.
  • Build in extra days. The pilot may cancel if the cloud ceiling is too low. In the Arctic, that's not a rare exception. It's the norm.
  • Park entry is free. There are no entrance fees and no gatehouse. Our Fees & Passes page explains entrance fees and America the Beautiful passes if you're visiting other parks on the same trip.

Before leaving Kotzebue, be sure to stop at the Northwest Arctic Heritage Center. The staff shares hyperlocal weather reports and information about river levels that you won't find anywhere else.

Once You're in the Park: No Transportation Infrastructure

Once the air taxi drops you off, there are no roads, shuttles, or maintained trails in Kobuk Valley. You can travel on foot across the dunes and along the riverbanks, float the river by packraft, or reach the park in winter by ski or sled. The Getting Around guide covers all the options and seasonal precautions.

Other Options: Guided Expeditions

Kobuk Valley isn't a park for unprepared visitors traveling independently. The safest option, especially on a first visit, is to hire a specialized Alaska outfitter. These operators bundle a charter flight, equipment, guiding, and evacuation logistics into a turnkey package.

They know the landing areas, river conditions, and favorable weather windows. That information changes from week to week and is difficult to obtain from Europe.

To plan the length and contents of your trip, the Itinerary & Length guide and the general park guide provide the information you need.

In Summary: The Best Route In Based on Your Starting Point

From France: Paris, or another French city, → U.S. hub, preferably Seattle → Anchorage → Kotzebue → air taxi to the park. Plan on spending one night in Kotzebue before entering the park.

From the contiguous United States: your city → Anchorage or Fairbanks → Kotzebue via Anchorage or Bettles via Fairbanks → air taxi.

From Anchorage: regional flight to Kotzebue, ~1.5 hours, followed by an air taxi. Allow at least half a day for the transfer.

From Fairbanks: regional flight to Bettles, ~1 hour, followed by an air taxi. This is the fastest option for the northeastern part of the park.

In every case, weather can delay your departure at any stage. Leave two days of flexibility in your itinerary and monitor local forecasts starting the week before you leave.
