Where to Fly: Which Airport for Mammoth Cave

Nashville International (BNA) Is the Obvious Choice

Nashville BNA, in Tennessee, is the main airport for visiting Mammoth Cave. It's about 90 miles from the Visitor Center, a 1.5-hour drive on Interstate 65. Major airlines and several budget carriers offer nonstop flights from major U.S. hubs, making connections from Europe easier.

Louisville Muhammad Ali International (SDF), the Kentucky Alternative

About 109 miles north, or a 2-hour drive, Louisville SDF serves several major U.S. routes and is the natural gateway if you're also exploring central Kentucky. Several rental car companies have locations at the airport.

Getting to Mammoth Cave from France

There are no regular direct flights from France to Nashville or Louisville. From Paris-CDG, you'll need to connect through a U.S. hub. Atlanta (ATL), Chicago (ORD), New York (JFK), and Miami (MIA) are the most common connections. Plan on 12 to 16 hours of total travel time, including the layover.

Once you land in Nashville, take I-65 North toward Louisville. At exit 53, the Cave City Exit, turn right onto KY-70, then follow Mammoth Cave Parkway to the Visitor Center. The route is well marked from the interstate, and it takes about 1.5 hours from BNA.

By Car: Distances and Drive Times from Gateway Cities

A car is the only practical way to reach Mammoth Cave. There is no train or regular bus service to the park.

Starting city Approx. distance Estimated drive time
Bowling Green, KY ~28 miles 30 min
Nashville, TN ~90 miles 1.5 hours
Louisville, KY ~109 miles 2 hours
Lexington, KY ~115 miles 2 hours
Cincinnati, OH ~165 miles 2.5 hours
Chicago, IL ~304 miles 5 hours

Watch your GPS. The NPS strongly advises against following GPS directions without checking them first. Some calculated routes use back roads that aren't suitable for RVs and large vehicles. From the north, take I-65, exit at Cave City (exit 53), then follow KY-70. From the south, take I-65 as well and follow the brown “Mammoth Cave National Park” signs once you leave the interstate. They're clear and easy to follow.

The Mammoth Cave Entrance

Mammoth Cave National Park has one main entrance, accessed via Mammoth Cave Parkway. There is no gate or entrance booth at the park entrance, so you can drive in freely at any time. The park is officially open 24 hours a day, year-round.

The Visitor Center operates on set hours. This is where you'll pick up tickets for cave tours. Reserve your time slots ahead of time, especially in summer and during U.S. school breaks, because tours fill up quickly. For current hours and cave tour admission prices, see our Practical Information, Rules & Safety page.

One detail to plan for before you leave is the temperature inside the cave. It stays at 54°F year-round, regardless of the season. Bring an extra layer, even in the middle of July.

Getting Around the Park: Car, Shuttle, and Parking

A free shuttle serves several areas of the park, including the main trailheads. During the busy season, the Visitor Center parking lot is often full by 9:30 a.m. Parking is free in the secondary lots, where you can easily catch the shuttle. For details on getting around each area and parking options, see the Getting Around Mammoth Cave guide.

Other Options: Tours and Public Transportation

No regional bus or train service connects a major city with Mammoth Cave National Park. If you're traveling without a car, the most practical option is to book an organized tour from Nashville or Louisville. Some operators offer day trips that include transportation and cave tour admission, eliminating the logistical challenge entirely.

For a longer road trip, Mammoth Cave fits naturally between Nashville and Louisville, or into an itinerary that includes the landscapes of Tennessee and the Appalachians. Our Road Trip guide offers ideas for incorporating Mammoth Cave into a broader itinerary.

In Summary: The Best Route to Mammoth Cave from Your Starting Point

From France, the most efficient option is still a flight with a connection to Nashville BNA, a rental car at the airport, and then a 1.5-hour drive north on I-65 to the Cave City exit. If you're exploring Kentucky in depth, Louisville SDF is a solid alternative. Either way, book your cave tours before leaving France.
