Where to Stay at Black Canyon of the Gunnison: Hotels and Lodges Near the Park

By David Sanchez · Data: National Park Service · ← Complete guide Black Canyon Of The Gunnison

Black Canyon of the Gunnison has no hotels or lodges within its boundaries. All traditional lodging options are outside the park. The town of Montrose, about 12 miles south of the South Rim, has most of the options and covers every budget. For the North Rim, the small town of Crawford is a quieter base. One night in Montrose is enough for a quick visit. Plan on two nights to explore both rims properly.

No Lodges in the Park: What to Know Before Booking

Unlike Yellowstone or Zion, Black Canyon of the Gunnison has no lodging facilities inside the park. The only accommodations within the park are campgrounds, covered in the Black Canyon camping guide. The full comparison of staying inside or outside the park is covered in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison lodging guide.

Where to Stay Around Black Canyon: Gateway Towns

Montrose: The Logical Base for the South Rim

Montrose is the main gateway town and, by far, the best equipped. From downtown, the drive takes 20 to 25 minutes. Take US-50 east, then CO-347 north for 6.8 miles to the South Rim entrance. Montrose Regional Airport (MTJ) has seasonal nonstop flights from Dallas, Houston, and Los Angeles, so you can avoid connecting through Denver if you're not taking a road trip.

The hotel selection covers every type of traveler. American chains such as Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express, and Best Western offer spacious rooms, included breakfast, and free parking. That's handy when you return from the canyon with dust all over your shoes. If you'd rather stay somewhere with a little character, The Rathbone Hotel stands out. This renovated boutique hotel in downtown Montrose has polished decor and attentive staff. It's a reliable choice if beige chain-hotel hallways aren't your thing. Rates are higher, but the difference is still reasonable.

Montrose also has several grocery stores, a good selection of restaurants, and every useful road-trip convenience, including gas stations, pharmacies, and laundromats. It's an easy place to return to at the end of the day after a morning in the canyon.

Crawford: Quiet and Convenient for the North Rim

Crawford is a village of a few hundred residents, about 6 miles from CO-92, the road leading to the North Rim. The park entrance is 11 miles away. Lodging is limited to a few B&Bs, one or two small motels, and vacation rentals through the usual platforms.

What Crawford does offer is peace and immediate access to the North Rim. If your goal is to reach that side at opening time and avoid midday light in the canyon, starting from Crawford saves you 30 to 45 minutes of driving each morning. The view from the North Rim differs from the one at the South Rim. It's less crowded and often preferred by visitors making a second trip.

There are two things to keep in mind. First, North Rim Road usually closes from mid-November through early May. There's no point booking Crawford outside that window if the North Rim is your goal. Second, Crawford's dining options are extremely limited. Bring groceries if you plan to stay several days.

Gunnison and Delta: Two Less Obvious Alternatives

Gunnison is about 43 miles east of the South Rim along US-50. The town is best known as a gateway to Crested Butte and for its university. If you're combining Black Canyon with Curecanti National Recreation Area, which follows US-50 between Gunnison and Montrose, staying in a Gunnison hotel can make sense. Otherwise, the daily drive to the park is long.

Delta, 19 miles west of Montrose, has a few inexpensive motels. It's useful when Montrose is sold out during busy summer weekends, but the extra daily driving eventually takes its toll.

Unless your itinerary specifically includes the North Rim or Curecanti, Montrose remains the most practical base for the vast majority of visitors.

How Many Nights Should You Plan at Black Canyon?

The ideal length of stay depends on what you want to do.

One night is enough for a South Rim visit focused on viewpoints. South Rim Drive is easy to cover in half a day, and short trails such as Rim Rock Trail and Warner Point Nature Trail are accessible without any special planning.

Two nights gives you the right pace if you want to descend into the canyon's depths, where the Inner Canyon routes require a permit picked up at the visitor center, combine the South Rim and North Rim, or take time for a hike lasting several hours.

Three nights or more starts to make sense if you're including Black Canyon in a larger circuit that takes in Curecanti, the roads through the San Juan Mountains, or the Grand Junction area. The Black Canyon of the Gunnison itinerary guide explains the best combinations for different trip lengths.

When to Book and What to Budget

Seasonal Pricing in Montrose

The South Rim is open 24 hours a day year-round, but most visitors come in June, July, and August. Montrose hotels sell out on peak-season weekends, especially around July 4. For a July stay, book 6 to 8 weeks ahead.

Spring, from May through June, and fall, from September through October, offer a good compromise. Daytime temperatures range from 50 to 77°F, crowds thin out noticeably, and Montrose hotel prices drop by 20 to 30% compared with the summer peak. To be honest, the morning light in the canyon during fall is striking.

Montrose remains accessible in winter, and hotels offer their lowest rates. North Rim Road is closed, however, and nighttime temperatures in the park can fall to 10°F. The Black Canyon seasonal guide explains conditions month by month, along with lodging prices for each season.

Sample Lodging Budget

In Montrose, expect to pay $100 to $160 per night for a standard chain hotel during peak season, and $70 to $100 in the off-season. Boutique properties such as The Rathbone Hotel range from $150 to $220. In Crawford, B&B rooms often run about $80 to $120.

These rates don't include the park entrance fee. It's $30 per vehicle or $15 per person entering on foot or by bicycle. The $55 annual pass pays for itself if you visit two or more parks during the year.

Our Recommendations by Travel Style

Comfort and convenience on a controlled budget. Choose a chain hotel in Montrose, such as Hampton Inn or Holiday Inn Express. Included breakfast, free parking, and quick access to the South Rim make things easy. It's predictable, and sometimes that's all you want after a day along the canyon rims.

Atmosphere and character. Stay at The Rathbone Hotel in Montrose. Book early in summer because rooms go quickly.

Best access to the North Rim. Book a B&B or vacation rental in Crawford. Check the road's opening dates, which may be as late as mid-May, before confirming your stay.

Families with children. Montrose is the clear choice. Large chain-hotel rooms, varied dining options, and simpler logistics more than make up for not being inside the park.
