Montrose Regional Airport (MTJ): The Gateway to the Park
Montrose is the go-to airport for Black Canyon. Located about 15 miles from the South Rim entrance, a 25-minute drive along US-50 and CO-347, it offers direct flights from Denver, Dallas, Phoenix, Los Angeles, and Houston, depending on the season. Service drops off sharply in winter, so check availability before locking in your dates.
The town of Montrose, just minutes from the runway, makes a natural base camp. You'll find gas stations, supermarkets, car rental agencies, and lodging at every price point. Our Hotels & Lodges page lists the best options in the area.
Grand Junction Regional Airport (GJT): The Regional Hub
About 90 miles northwest of the park, a 1.5-hour drive, Grand Junction offers a wider selection of domestic connections and sometimes more competitive fares in the off-season. The drive from Grand Junction follows US-50 through the Uncompahgre Valley, with open views of Colorado's mesas along the way.
Denver International Airport (DEN): The International Gateway
Denver is the essential hub for transatlantic flights and domestic connections. Plan on 230 miles and about 4 hours of driving to the park via westbound I-70 and southbound US-50. If you don't want to drive after a long flight, a domestic flight from Denver to Montrose, about 1 hour, takes care of that.
Getting to Black Canyon from France: Direct Flight or Connection
Direct flights connect Paris-CDG and Denver (DEN) year-round, with a flight time of about 10 hours. Once you land in Denver, you've got two options.
- Take a domestic flight: Denver to Montrose takes about 1 hour. It's ideal if your schedule is tight or you'd rather arrive rested.
- Rent a car: Drive from Denver to the park in 4 hours via I-70 and US-50. It pays off if you're visiting several Colorado parks on the same road trip. Mesa Verde, Arches, and Rocky Mountain are all within reach.

Park Entrances
South Rim: The Main Entrance
The South Rim is the busiest entrance and the only one accessible year-round, 24 hours a day. The fee station sits on CO-347, 7 miles north of US-50 (GPS: 9800 Highway 347, Montrose, CO 81401). South Rim Road then winds for several miles along the canyon rim, passing a dozen overlooks.
Current fees are $30 per private vehicle, $25 per motorcycle, and $15 per person entering on foot or by bicycle. The park's annual pass costs $55. If you're visiting several national parks in a year, the America the Beautiful interagency pass is accepted at all federal entrances. For entrance fees and annual passes, see the National Parks Fees & Passes page.
To get your bearings before you arrive, see our Map page.
North Rim: The Wild Entrance
The North Rim offers a completely different atmosphere: fewer people, steeper views, and an 11-mile gravel approach from Crawford via CO-92. The entrance is open 24 hours a day, but North Rim Road generally closes from mid-November through early May because of snow. Check road conditions on the official NPS website before you leave, especially during the shoulder seasons. Our When to Go page explains how the seasons affect access to the park.
Getting Around the Park: Driving, Parking, and the Canyon Bottom
Driving on the Rims
Unlike Zion or the Grand Canyon South Rim, Black Canyon has no official shuttle. Your vehicle is the only way to get around either rim. South Rim Road is paved and suitable for all vehicle sizes, including standard RVs. North Rim Road is gravel, can get slippery after rain, and isn't recommended for vehicles with very low clearance. Our Getting Around page covers all the driving rules inside the park.
Parking
Every overlook along South Rim Road has a parking area, often with limited capacity during peak season.
Can You Drive to the Bottom of the Canyon?
No. No road reaches the bottom of Black Canyon. You can only enter the canyon on foot, via technical, unmarked Inner Canyon Routes that require a free permit issued at the visitor center. These descents are for experienced, properly equipped hikers, not typical family outings. For hikes accessible from the rims, see our Hiking page.
Other Options: Organized Tours
A few operators offer full-day van tours from Denver or Grand Junction. This can work if you don't want to drive or don't have an international driver's license. The tradeoff is a fixed schedule, required stops, and zero spontaneity. If you want to explore at your own pace, we always recommend renting a car.
In Summary: The Best Route In, Based on Where You're Starting
