Best national parks to visit in winter: sunny deserts or snowy canyons?
From California deserts and the Everglades to snowy canyons, choose parks for November through February based on your interests, road access, and winter conditions.

The best national parks to visit in winter offer very different experiences: spotting an alligator in the wetlands, walking among cacti, or admiring rock spires dusted with snow. We'd choose the scenery first, then plan the route. An open park doesn't guarantee clear roads or passable trails.
Which parks are best for hiking without the intense heat?
In Death Valley, shadows trace the dunes and mountains rise above the salt flats. The NPS recommends November through March for hiking, especially at lower elevations. Conditions in the nearby mountains are another story: their peaks may be covered in snow while the valley floor enjoys a mild day.

To visit Death Valley outside the hottest months, keep your plans flexible. Rain can cause lasting damage to roads. In its October 10, 2026, conditions update, the NPS still listed Bonnie Clare Road and Scotty's Castle as closed, with no reopening date.
In the Everglades, look for wildlife along the water's edge. You can watch wading birds and alligators from boardwalks without committing to a long hike. The usual dry season, from December through April, offers good wildlife viewing. Its timing varies with rainfall, and it doesn't eliminate mosquitoes or cool spells. The national parks near Miami offer more ways to explore on this Florida trip.
| Park | What to go for | Our preferred timing | Possible gateway city | Main constraint |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Death Valley | Dunes, salt flats, and desert hikes | November through February | Las Vegas | Roads damaged by rain |
| Everglades | Birds, alligators, and wetlands | December through February | Miami | Variable weather and water levels |
| Joshua Tree | Rock formations and Joshua trees | November through February, with warm clothing | Palm Springs | Possible freezing temperatures and wind |
| Saguaro | Giant cacti and the Sonoran Desert | November through February, at lower elevations | Tucson | Cold nights and mountain snow |
Joshua Tree is a good choice for walks among the rocks, but its winters can be bitterly cold. At Saguaro, we'd stick to lower elevations for walks among the cacti. Mountain snow calls for different preparations in the higher reaches of the Rincon Mountain District.
Mild days don't mean warm nights. Florida and the Southwest also make for two distinct trips: choose a region before adding more parks.
Bryce Canyon, Grand Canyon, or Yellowstone for snow?
Bryce Canyon: red rocks covered in snow. White-capped hoodoos transform the amphitheater. But cold and ice also change how you explore. Start by planning your access to Bryce Canyon before choosing a hike: you can enjoy the views without descending among the formations.
Grand Canyon: choose the South Rim. The South Rim welcomes winter visitors, though storms can disrupt access. An accessible overlook may sit above an icy trail, so heading below the rim requires suitable gear and a carefully chosen route. Snow is never guaranteed during your stay.
The North Rim calls for closer attention. For fall 2026, the NPS announced limited daytime access through November 30, unless snow forced an earlier closure. Camping and several services had closed in October. North Rim roads close to vehicles from December 1 through May 14.
Yellowstone: a winter trip all its own. The road between the North and Northeast Entrances is the main exception to winter road closures for regular vehicles. Elsewhere, motorized travel over snow is regulated. Getting around Yellowstone therefore determines where you stay and what you do. We'd plan this as a separate trip from a canyon road trip.
Which U.S. parks should you visit in November?
For a November trip focused on desert hiking, we'd choose Death Valley, Saguaro, or Joshua Tree. Plan less packed days than you would in summer, and save your driving for daylight hours.
The Everglades are transitioning into the dry season, so November doesn't always offer the same conditions as January. Cold fronts and insects are still possible during the dry season.
Zion is an option for red cliff scenery. When the Zion Canyon shuttles are running, the canyon's scenic drive is closed to regular private vehicle traffic, with specific exceptions. Check the schedule for your travel dates.
The Narrows requires specific preparation: cold water, hypothermia risk, flash floods, and possible winter ice. We wouldn't treat it as an impromptu stroll.
At Bryce Canyon and the Grand Canyon, snow and freezing temperatures are already possible. A November trip therefore means choosing between a desert-focused itinerary and a getaway that accounts for the challenges of higher elevations.
Roads, reservations, and gear: planning a flexible road trip
At Bryce Canyon, the roads to Fairyland Point and Paria View close to vehicles in winter. The main road may close temporarily for snow removal. The NPS also lists two seasonal trail closures: the Wall Street side of the Navajo Loop and the Rim Trail between Inspiration Point and Bryce Point.
At Yellowstone, the northern route runs through Mammoth Hot Springs, Tower Junction, and Lamar Valley. Plan to enter through Gardiner: the winter closure east of Cooke City prevents you from continuing east on a through route. This road doesn't provide car access to Old Faithful either.
Before booking, check roads, shuttles, permits, lodging, and campgrounds separately. For Yellowstone, check authorized winter transportation options before deciding where to stay.
Pack layers, wind protection, water, and offline maps. On packed snow or ice, use traction gear suited to the terrain. Turn back if your gear or experience isn't up to the conditions.
We recommend driving during daylight and building in an extra day. When choosing an airport based on the parks you'll visit, start with a realistic itinerary. If you plan to take day trips from Las Vegas, have a backup plan.
At Joshua Tree, holidays and weekends can be very busy. Before renting an RV in the U.S., ask which systems remain usable in freezing weather and what restrictions the rental agreement includes.
Our take: start with the desert for a first trip
First road trip. We'd choose a desert-focused route with hikes at lower elevations. Death Valley or Saguaro lets you build a trip around that experience. We advise against stringing together high-elevation stops to recreate a summer itinerary: clear roads don't mean ice-free trails.
Families looking for mild weather. We'd suggest the Everglades from December through February if the kids enjoy wildlife and boardwalk walks. The desert is another option, provided you're comfortable with cold nights. Joshua Tree is less suitable for anyone expecting consistently warm weather.
Couples drawn to snow. We'd choose Bryce Canyon or the Grand Canyon's South Rim, focusing on overlooks. The extra day suggested above gives you room to adjust your stops as access changes. We advise against making the entire trip depend on one particular hike.
A dedicated winter trip. We'd reserve Yellowstone for travelers willing to arrange transportation before planning their stops. The northern road's accessibility to cars doesn't mean the rest of the park is accessible in the same way.
