Luxury hotels in national parks: make your American adventure unforgettable
Compare luxury hotels and historic lodges in US national parks, from room comfort and location to included amenities, booking windows, and deposit requirements.

A soaring timber ceiling and a grand fireplace promise a very different night from a suite overlooking the desert. Choosing among luxury hotels in national parks means balancing three priorities: comfort, history, and easy access to the scenery. From Yosemite to Yellowstone, we compare rooms, amenities, and booking policies, distinguishing properties inside the parks from places nearby.
Which luxury hotel should you choose in a US national park?
A room's price tells you little about its amenities. In the parks, you also pay for a rare location, a historic building, or the chance to start exploring without first driving to an entrance.

The properties below suit different kinds of trips. Inclusion here does not imply a five-star rating or comparable amenities. Published operating and booking schedules are subject to change.
| Property | Location | Best suited to | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Ahwahnee | In Yosemite Valley | Architecture, lounges, and a couples getaway | Main-building rooms and cottages offer different experiences |
| Lake Yellowstone Hotel & Cabins | Inside Yellowstone, near the lake | A grand hotel atmosphere | Even suites have no air-conditioning or TV |
| Jenny Lake Lodge | Inside Grand Teton | Cabins and stays with meals included, depending on the package | Strict prepayment and cancellation terms |
| El Tovar | Inside Grand Canyon, on the South Rim | History and a location on the rim | Current operating status must be confirmed |
| The Inn at Death Valley | Inside Death Valley, at Furnace Creek | Pool, gardens, and breaks between outings | Outdoor heat and room tax |
| Old Faithful Inn | Inside Yellowstone | Architecture and proximity to the geyser | Some rooms have shared bathrooms |
| The Grand Hotel | In Tusayan, outside Grand Canyon | A base with an indoor pool | Driving required to reach viewpoints |
| Amangiri | In Canyon Point, outside the parks | A stay focused on the hotel and desert | Excursions require separate planning |
| Volcano House | Inside Hawaiʻi Volcanoes | A location near the caldera | No air-conditioning or elevator |
| Under Canvas West Yellowstone | Outside Yellowstone | A furnished tent stay | Bathroom facilities vary by tent category |
A spectacular lobby can lead to a simple room. We therefore consider the building, the room category you book, and the services you will actually use separately. For a short stop, location may justify the expense. For several days of downtime, privacy, meals, and places to relax matter more.
Amangani, Phantom Ranch, and Grand Canyon Lodge are not available options as of October 18, 2026, for the reasons explained below.
The Ahwahnee in Yosemite and The Inn at Death Valley: two approaches to a stay
The Ahwahnee: enjoy the building as much as Yosemite. Stone, timber, and expansive windows create an architectural setting that embraces the valley. The lounges and dining room are part of the experience. Guests also have access to a heated outdoor pool, weather permitting.
Rooms in the main building put you closer to the shared spaces. The cottages, which are separate accommodations, offer a different kind of stay. Neither designation guarantees an unobstructed view of the cliffs.
We would choose this hotel for a couples getaway with time to enjoy the lounges or pool. For a family out exploring from morning to night, those amenities may be harder to justify paying extra for. Before you stay in Yosemite, compare room categories at Yosemite hotels and check for construction notices affecting your dates.
Yosemite reservations open 366 days in advance. The Ahwahnee's standard terms require payment for the first night when you book and cancellation at least seven days before arrival for a deposit refund.
The Inn at Death Valley: slow down between outings. At Furnace Creek, gardens, a pool, and air-conditioned rooms contrast with the stark desert scenery. The Inn and the Ranch are separate properties within The Oasis at Death Valley.
At the Inn, choosing a room or a casita separate from the main building changes the logistics of your stay. Casitas come with a golf cart for getting around the property, since you cannot drive your car directly to these accommodations.
Advertised rates exclude a 12% room tax. Standard terms require a one-night deposit, refundable if you cancel at least 72 hours before arrival. Compare Death Valley hotels after taking time to choose the right season for Death Valley. Air-conditioning in your room does nothing to ease the heat while you are out exploring.
Lake Yellowstone Hotel, Jenny Lake Lodge, and Old Faithful Inn: which stay fits your trip?
Lake Yellowstone Hotel & Cabins: choose it for the atmosphere. A yellow facade with columns and inviting common areas create a classic resort setting. Rooms in the main hotel, annexes, and cabins offer different surroundings, however. Compare both the building and the bathroom facilities.
Even the suites have no air-conditioning or TV. The property also states that it has no internet service. We would choose it for its lakeside atmosphere rather than modern in-room amenities.
Following its seasonal closure on October 11, 2026, the next season is scheduled for May 14 through October 10, 2027. When planning where to stay in Yellowstone, start by matching the areas you want to visit with Yellowstone hotels.
Jenny Lake Lodge: weigh the package and the privacy. In Grand Teton, these cabins let you combine walks with time at the lodge. The Signature Stay package includes breakfast, a five-course dinner, and bicycles. Horseback riding is subject to availability.
Duplex Cabins share a wall and a porch with the neighboring unit. For more privacy, we would choose a separate Freestanding Cabin. Rooms have fans but no air-conditioning.
Reservations open on a rolling basis 366 days before your desired date. For stays of three nights or less, the full room charge and taxes are prepaid; for longer stays, the deposit covers three nights. Cancellations before the 45-day cutoff receive a refund minus a $40 fee; within 45 days of arrival, the deposit is forfeited.
These terms matter as much as the included meals when staying in Grand Teton. Compare Grand Teton hotels based on your itinerary and how much money you are comfortable committing upfront.
Old Faithful Inn: pay for the history. The log-built lobby and proximity to the geyser are its main draws. Some historic rooms have shared bathrooms. Upgrading does not get you air-conditioning or a TV.
After the season ended on October 12, 2026, the next opening is scheduled for April 30 through October 11, 2027. For both this hotel and Lake Yellowstone Hotel, decide what you want before the fifth of the month, when reservations open for the corresponding month of the following year, up to 13 months ahead.
In summer, dinner reservations are separate at both hotels. Guests can book a table 60 days before arrival, following the instructions sent by email.
Grand Canyon hotels: El Tovar, The Grand Hotel, and Phantom Ranch
El Tovar: a South Rim stay, subject to reopening. Its location in Grand Canyon Village lets you sleep right on the canyon rim. Not every room has a canyon view. Access is by stairs, with no elevator, and some suites require contacting the central reservations office.
Flooding on August 29, 2026, damaged water infrastructure. Overnight stays at hotels inside the park were suspended beginning August 31. As of October 18, 2026, the NPS lodging page still carries this alert, while Xanterra says it is keeping reservations for October 1 onward. Obtain confirmation that the hotel will be operating on your dates.
The general booking window for Xanterra's South Rim lodges opens on the first of the month, up to 13 months ahead. That does not establish that El Tovar has reopened.
The Grand Hotel: a base outside the park with a pool. In Tusayan, this hotel is about 1 mile from the park's South Entrance. That distance does not reflect the drive to the viewpoints. It has an indoor pool and a hot tub.
Tusayan accommodations were not affected by the suspension of overnight stays inside the park. When planning a Grand Canyon stay, compare Grand Canyon hotels by location, amenities, and actual availability.
Phantom Ranch and the North Rim: two options to rule out. At the bottom of the canyon, Phantom Ranch offers rustic lodging that cannot be reached by car. The NPS lists it as closed following the floods, with no reopening date announced as of October 18, 2026. Its usual lottery, held roughly 15 months before a stay, is not an announcement that operations will resume.
On the North Rim, the Dragon Bravo Fire destroyed Grand Canyon Lodge's main building on July 13, 2025. No hotel accommodations are available in this part of the park during the 2026 season. Cape Royal and Point Imperial roads are also closed from sunset on October 15 to sunrise on November 3, 2026. Check the NPS North Rim restrictions.
Amangiri, Amangani, Volcano House, and Under Canvas: distinct experiences
Amangiri: make time for the desert. In Canyon Point in southern Utah, its desert-facing suites sit outside the national parks. We would consider it a hotel-focused break on a Colorado Plateau itinerary.
Aman estimates a drive of about 4 hours and 30 minutes from either Las Vegas or Phoenix airport, compared with 25 minutes from Page airport. These estimates do not tell you how long it takes to reach the places you want to visit. Map out excursions to Zion or Bryce Canyon separately before deciding how long to stay.
Amangani: wait for a confirmed reopening. Near Jackson in the Grand Teton area, this property is also outside a park. As of October 18, 2026, it reports that it is closed for renovations, with no firm reopening date. We are leaving it off the shortlist.
Volcano House: choose it for its connection to the landscape. Inside Hawaiʻi Volcanoes, its location near Kīlauea's caldera matters more than its amenities. Rooms have heat but no air-conditioning, and the building has no elevator.
One night's stay, including taxes, is charged at booking. The standard deadline for canceling without a penalty is seven days before arrival. Compare Hawaiʻi Volcanoes hotels without assuming a room with a view guarantees lava sightings: volcanic activity, weather, and restrictions still determine what you can see.
Under Canvas West Yellowstone: accept the limitations of a tent. This glamping camp, offering camping with added comforts, advertises a location about ten minutes from the West Entrance. Time spent in Yellowstone traffic comes on top of that drive.
Safari tents use a shared bathhouse with individual private bathrooms. Other categories have their own bathrooms. Canvas offers less protection from noise and temperature changes than a hotel room. The announced 2027 season runs from May 19 through September 7.
How much should you commit, and when should you book?
A price range for each property would be misleading without comparable dates, occupancy, room categories, and totals including taxes. For budgeting, request a price for the entire stay, then distinguish the final cost from the amount tied up when you book.
Jenny Lake Lodge, for example, requires a larger upfront commitment for a short stay because full prepayment is required. At The Ahwahnee, The Inn at Death Valley, and Volcano House, standard terms require payment for the first night. Special offers may have different rules.
Also consider what the expense covers. At Jenny Lake Lodge, factor in the meals included in the Signature Stay package. At The Inn at Death Valley, the 12% tax increases the advertised rate. A pool justifies paying extra only if your schedule leaves time to use it.
Before confirming, check:
- Room category, sleeping arrangements, and bathroom facilities.
- The total including taxes and any included meals.
- The deposit charged and its refund terms.
- Your rate's cancellation deadline.
- Opening dates, construction, and access.
- Entrance fees or permits you need to arrange separately.
Choose your room category before the booking calendar opens, instead of focusing only on a hotel name. You can also combine lodges with more affordable accommodations: book one stop where you will use the amenities, then plan the other nights around sightseeing.
Our take: choose a stop you will have time to enjoy
First trip. We prioritize location and a workable schedule. Yellowstone's announced 2027 seasons differ: Old Faithful Inn opens April 30, while Lake Yellowstone Hotel opens May 14. At the Grand Canyon, we advise against building a stay around El Tovar without confirmation that it is open. Tusayan offers another way to organize your visit, with a drive to the viewpoints.
Couples. We would choose The Ahwahnee for its lounges and architecture, and The Inn at Death Valley for its pool and gardens. At Jenny Lake Lodge, a Freestanding Cabin is a better fit for travelers seeking privacy. We would advise against using Amangiri simply as a place to sleep between two long days of excursions.
Families. We put bathrooms, sleeping arrangements, and amenities ahead of prestige. Some Old Faithful Inn rooms have shared bathrooms. At Lake Yellowstone Hotel, even a suite comes without air-conditioning or a TV. The Grand Hotel is worth comparing if its indoor pool fits the breaks you have planned.
Budget travelers. We would focus the splurge on one night somewhere you want to stay, with time to enjoy it. Be wary of inflexible commitments: at Jenny Lake Lodge, you lose the deposit if you cancel within 45 days of arrival. In Death Valley, include the 12% tax before deciding. A complete quote tells you more than a room photo.
