Rapid City Regional Airport (RAP): The Most Direct Option
Rapid City Regional Airport is the main airport for the Black Hills. It offers regional flights from Denver, Minneapolis, Chicago, and Salt Lake City. From the airport, plan on a 1 to 1.25-hour drive south on US Highway 385 to reach the park's Visitor Center. The major rental car companies have locations here. Reserve your car before you leave, since inventory runs low quickly in summer (June through August).
Denver International Airport (DEN): The Major Regional Hub
Denver International Airport handles connections from French and European airports. It's also a natural stop if you're combining Wind Cave with other parks in the American West, such as Arches, Rocky Mountain, or Mesa Verde. From Denver, Wind Cave is about 435 to 466 miles north, a 6.5- to 7-hour drive via I-25 North and then US Highway 385 south. It's a long drive, but the route passes through landscapes that make it worthwhile.
Getting to Wind Cave from France: Flights with a Connection
There are no direct flights from France to the Black Hills. The most common route from Paris (CDG) is a transatlantic flight to Denver (DEN), followed by a domestic connection to Rapid City (RAP). Air France offers direct flights from Paris to Denver. Other airlines route through Chicago O'Hare or Minneapolis-Saint Paul.
Denver remains the most convenient connection. You can pick up your rental car as soon as you land and drive straight to Wind Cave, or break up the trip into stages. Connections through Minneapolis often reach Rapid City with just one stop, but the schedules are less flexible. Plan on 12 to 16 hours of door-to-door travel from Paris, depending on your itinerary and the length of your layover.
By Car: Distances and Drive Times from Gateway Towns
You can only reach Wind Cave by car. The Visitor Center, the required starting point for cave tours, is 2,600 feet west of US Highway 385.
| Gateway town | Approx. distance | Estimated drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Hot Springs (SD) | 11 miles | 15 min |
| Custer (SD) | 22 miles | 30 min |
| Rapid City (SD) | approx. 68 miles | 1 to 1.25 hours |
| Keystone / Mount Rushmore | approx. 40 miles | 45 min |
| Badlands NP (Interior) | approx. 112 miles | 2 hours |
| Denver (CO) | approx. 435 to 466 miles | 6.5 to 7 hours |
Hot Springs and Custer are the two most convenient bases for an overnight stay near the park. Lodging is more affordable than in Rapid City, and the location is ideal for combining your visit with Custer State Park. Our Where to Stay guide covers the best options nearby.
Wind Cave's Entrance
Wind Cave National Park has just one entrance on US Highway 385. There's no area to choose from and no essential secondary road.
From the north (Custer, Rapid City), take US Highway 385 south. The park entrance sign will appear on your right. From the south (Hot Springs), take US Highway 385 north. The entrance will be on your left. In both cases, the Visitor Center is 2,600 feet past the intersection.
The park is open 24 hours a day, year-round. Visitor Center hours and cave tour times vary by season, so check before you leave by calling 605.745.4600 or visiting the official NPS website. In winter, snow can close interior roads, with an average annual snowfall of 30 inches. To choose the right weather window, see our When to Go page.
Getting Around the Park
The Visitor Center parking lot fills before 10 a.m. on busy days during peak season (July and August). Arrive around 8 a.m. to make sure you get your cave tour time. For interior roads, speed limits, and parking rules, the Getting Around Wind Cave guide covers everything in detail.
Other Options: Organized Tours
If you're traveling without a car, operators based in Rapid City offer day trips that combine Wind Cave, Mount Rushmore, and Custer State Park. This works well for a first look at the park, but it greatly limits your schedule and choice of cave tour. No public bus route serves the park.
In Summary: Your Route Based on Where You're Starting
From France, fly to Denver (DEN), take a connecting flight to Rapid City (RAP), rent a car, and drive 1.25 hours south on US Highway 385. If you're road-tripping from Denver, set aside a full day for the drive or break it into stages across the Great Plains. Already in the Black Hills? Hot Springs (15 minutes) and Custer (30 minutes) are your natural gateways. To include Wind Cave in a Badlands and Black Hills itinerary, our Itinerary & Length guide offers ready-made combinations.
