Where to Fly: Which Airport for New River Gorge?

Yeager Airport (CRW, Charleston): The Closest Option

Yeager Airport is the region's main gateway. From there, it's about 37 miles and 55 minutes to the Canyon Rim Visitor Center. American Airlines and United serve the airport from Charlotte (CLT), Philadelphia (PHL), and Washington-Reagan (DCA). Flight options are limited, and fares can climb outside the busy season, so keep an eye on prices.

Major International Hubs

For more flexibility on fares or a flight from France, three hubs are worth considering:

  • Pittsburgh International (PIT): about 143 miles north, or a 2.5-hour drive. Good transatlantic and domestic service.
  • Charlotte Douglas (CLT): about 230 miles south, or a 3.5- to 4-hour drive. American Airlines hub with numerous nonstop or one-stop flights from Paris-CDG.
  • Washington Dulles (IAD): about 193 miles east, or a 3- to 3.5-hour drive. United hub with frequent service from France.

Our recommendation is Pittsburgh or Charlotte, depending on your departure airport in France. The extra cost of a domestic flight to Charleston is only worthwhile during the busy season, when rental car rates in Charlotte or Washington remain reasonable.

Getting to New River Gorge from France: Nonstop or Connecting Flight?

There are no nonstop flights between France and Charleston. The standard route takes two steps. Fly transatlantic from Paris-CDG, Lyon, or Bordeaux to a U.S. hub such as Charlotte, Washington Dulles, or Pittsburgh, then rent a car to reach the park. Plan on 10 to 14 hours of total travel from France. The Paris-to-Charlotte flight takes about 9 hours.

Renting a car in Charlotte or Washington is often cheaper than taking a second domestic flight to Charleston, especially outside the busy season. It also gives you the most freedom to explore the surrounding area.

By Car: Distances and Drive Times from Gateway Cities

A car is the only practical way to visit New River Gorge. West Virginia's highway network is in good shape, but the roads near the park become winding and wooded. Build in extra time.

Starting city Distance Estimated drive time
Beckley (WV) ~12 miles 20 min
Charleston (WV) ~56 miles 1 hr
Columbus (OH) ~193 miles 3 hr 15 min
Washington, D.C. ~205 miles 3.5 hr
Pittsburgh (PA) ~143 miles 2.5 hr
Charlotte (NC) ~230 miles 3 hr 45 min
Richmond (VA) ~236 miles 4 hr

Beckley is the natural gateway city. Lodging, gas stations, and stores are concentrated just outside the park. See our Where to Stay page for options in Beckley and the immediate area.

New River Gorge Entrances

The park has no single gated entrance or admission fee. Access is free and open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round. Four main areas contain most access points and visitor centers.

Canyon Rim (north, US-19 area). This is the park's signature area, and the one most visitors see first. Canyon Rim Visitor Center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It closes on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day. The center overlooks the famous New River Gorge Bridge, which you can see from several overlooks accessible on foot. From Beckley, take northbound Route 19 and follow the well-marked exit.

Grandview (southeast). Cliffs overlooking the gorge offer striking views here. The seasonal visitor center opens from Memorial Day, in late May, through Labor Day, in early September. Take WV-9 from Beckley.

Sandstone (south, near Hinton). This quiet, historic gateway is ideal for hikers and anglers. Its visitor center is open year-round from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the same closure dates as Canyon Rim.

Thurmond (central). This former coal-mining town is now a ghost town, reached by a forest road. Its seasonal visitor center, open from Memorial Day through Labor Day, offers fascinating historical context about the coal-mining era.

To reach the park's administrative headquarters, take northbound Route 19 from Beckley to the Glen Jean exit. Turn immediately left after leaving the highway, then right at the next intersection. Park Headquarters is straight ahead on the right.

Getting Around the Park: Driving and Parking

New River Gorge has no official shuttle between areas. You need a car to travel from Canyon Rim to Sandstone because the gorge creates a natural barrier between the two sides, with more than 37 miles of road between the visitor centers. Parking at Canyon Rim is free. Arrive before 10 a.m. on weekends from May through October to find a space. The Long Point Trail parking lot and several bridge access points have limited capacity, so carpool if you're traveling in a group. For internal roads, driving conditions, and parking in other areas, see the Getting Around New River Gorge guide.

Other Options: Train and Organized Tours

New River Gorge isn't designed for travelers without a car, but two alternatives are available.

Amtrak (Cardinal line). The Cardinal Line runs between New York and Chicago via Washington, stopping at Thurmond (WV), in the heart of the park, three times a week in each direction. It's one of the few direct rail connections to a U.S. national park. Be aware that Thurmond is a flag stop, so you need to arrange your boarding in advance on the Amtrak website. Once you arrive, you'll be on foot. Plan your logistics accordingly.

Organized tours. A few agencies based in Washington or Pittsburgh offer weekend trips with rafting on the New River and transportation included. It's convenient, but schedules are inflexible.

In Summary: The Best Access Route from Your Starting Point

Arriving from France? Fly to Charlotte (CLT) or Washington Dulles (IAD), then rent a car for the 3.5- to 4-hour drive. Already on the East Coast? Pittsburgh or Washington make natural starting points, with an overnight in Beckley so you can get an early start the next morning. Traveling without a car? The Amtrak Cardinal to Thurmond is the only serious option, paired with an organized rafting trip.

Admission to the park is free, and access is open year-round. The season only affects logistics and what you'll experience on site. Our When to Visit guide can help you choose based on your priorities, while our New River Gorge guide gives you an overview of the park.
