Mesa Verde Weather: Forecast, Climate, and Current Conditions

By Jocelyn Pion · Data: National Park Service · ← Complete guide Mesa Verde

Mesa Verde reaches nearly 8,530 feet above sea level in southwestern Colorado, and that matters. Elevation sets the rules here, and the park has a high-mesa continental climate with sharp seasonal swings. Summers are warm in the morning and stormy in the afternoon; winters are downright cold, with icy roads a regular occurrence. Spring and fall bring pleasant days, but weather can change quickly. One rule applies in every season: pack layers.

A few useful details: July and August lows of 55°F may sound mild, but they come with higher humidity brought by the summer monsoon. June highs can run above average during high-pressure spells and approach 90 to 91°F in some years. In winter, daytime highs stay close to freezing, and nighttime temperatures commonly drop below 19°F.

Is Mesa Verde Cold? Records and Extremes

Yes, and fairly early in the season. In winter, nighttime temperatures commonly reach 18°F, and sometimes fall even lower. Even in the middle of July, a thunderstorm can send the apparent temperature down 18 to 27°F within minutes. Hikers who get wet and are exposed to the wind can develop hypothermia, even in summer weather. At the other extreme, June days on exposed plateaus can rise above 90°F.

The daily temperature range often exceeds 27°F. What feels comfortable at 9 a.m. may not be enough at 5 p.m. and may feel stifling at noon.

What to Wear by Season

The basic principle is a layering system. It works year-round.

Spring and fall: a breathable base layer, fleece or merino wool, and a waterproof windbreaker. The stairs in the cliff dwellings are steep and sometimes wet even in dry weather, so waterproof trail shoes are essential.

Summer: a lightweight T-shirt in the morning, but keep a compact rain jacket in your daypack at all times. A hat and SPF 50 sunscreen are essential. At 8,530 feet, UV exposure is significantly higher than it is at lower elevations. In July and August, also pack a warm layer for evenings at camp.

Winter: a down jacket, warm hat, gloves, and waterproof shoes with lugged soles. On the roads, check NPS alerts before getting behind the wheel.

Alerts and Conditions to Watch

Icy roads (October to April). The NPS may require specific equipment at the park entrance, including snow tires, four-wheel drive, or chains. Check road conditions on the official website before you leave.

Summer thunderstorms (July to mid-September). Lightning strikes high points and ridgelines. Stay out of open areas and off the plateaus after 1 p.m. If a storm moves in, immediately descend from exposed trails and find sturdy shelter, such as a visitor building or a vehicle. Never shelter under an isolated tree.

Seasonal closures. Wetherill Mesa, the campground, and many services close in winter. Check the Mesa Verde guide and NPS alerts before you leave to find out which areas will be accessible on your visit date.

Fire danger (May to October). The plateau gets little precipitation outside the monsoon season. During dry, windy weather, trails or areas may close without notice.
