Where to Fly: Which Airport for Congaree

Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE): The Closest Airport

Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE) is the closest regional gateway to the park, about 31 miles from the visitor center, or a 45- to 50-minute drive via SC Highway 48. Delta, American Airlines, and United operate daily flights from major hubs on the East Coast and in the South, including Atlanta, Charlotte, New York, and Washington. All the major rental car companies have counters in the terminal, and you can be on your way within minutes. If you've already arranged your domestic connections through a U.S. hub, Columbia is the simplest choice.

Charlotte Douglas International (CLT): The Preferred Transatlantic Hub

Charlotte Douglas International (CLT) is about 124 miles north of the park, a 2-hour drive via Interstate 77 South. It's the best option if you're arriving from France: Air France operates nonstop flights from Paris-CDG, with a flight time of about 9 hours, and American Airlines and British Airways add more transatlantic service. Once you arrive, Interstate 77 toward Columbia is the main route. It's wide, well signed, and straightforward to drive.

Keep in mind that Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta (ATL), about 267 miles southwest of the park and a 4-hour drive away, can make sense if you're including Congaree in a longer road trip to the Great Smoky Mountains, Savannah, or the Georgia coast.

Getting to Congaree from France: Connecting Flights

There are no direct flights from France to South Carolina. The fastest route from Paris-CDG connects through Charlotte (CLT), followed by a 2-hour drive to the visitor center. The Atlanta (ATL) option with Air France is also possible, but it extends the drive to 4 hours.

From Lyon, Bordeaux, or Toulouse, you'll need to add a connecting flight to Paris or Amsterdam before the long-haul flight.

By Car: Distances and Drive Times from Gateway Cities

A car is essential for getting to Congaree. No shuttle or regular bus service connects the region to the park. Here are approximate drive times from the main cities:

Starting city Distance Estimated drive time
Columbia (SC) ~25 miles 35 to 40 min
Charleston (SC) ~115 miles 1 hr 50 min
Charlotte (NC) ~124 miles 2 hr
Savannah (GA) ~190 miles 2 hr 45 min
Raleigh (NC) ~249 miles 3 hr 45 min
Atlanta (GA) ~267 miles 4 hr

Columbia remains the most convenient base for exploring the park, with affordable lodging, every essential store nearby, and a 35- to 40-minute drive to the entrance. On a road trip through the Southeast, Congaree fits naturally between Charlotte and Charleston, or as a detour along the Atlanta to Raleigh route. Our Where to Stay page lists the most convenient options based on where you're staying.

The Park Entrance

Congaree has just one main entrance. From Interstate 77, take Exit 5 and turn onto SC Highway 48 East (Bluff Road). Follow the brown and white Congaree National Park signs for about 8 miles, then bear slightly right onto Old Bluff Road. The Harry Hampton Visitor Center is a few hundred yards farther on.

The visitor center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The park itself is accessible 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, except during temporary closures due to flooding or safety concerns. Check the water levels on Cedar Creek and the Congaree River before you set out. In this floodplain forest, water levels can rise very quickly, sometimes without warning. Our Weather page helps you plan for conditions.

Getting Around Congaree: Driving, Trails, and Parking

There is no shuttle inside the park. For internal routes, parking, and trailheads, you'll find all the details in the Getting Around Congaree guide.

Other Options: Tours and Car-Free Alternatives

There is no regular bus service between Columbia and Congaree. If you're traveling without a car, you have two options.

The first is a guided tour from Columbia, including canoe or kayak trips on Cedar Creek. It's a way to discover the forest beneath the canopy, gliding between exposed tree roots and centuries-old trunks. A few local outfitters also offer guided walks. Our Things to Do page lists the available activities and outings.

The second, and by far the simplest, is to rent a car at CAE airport or in downtown Columbia. That's what we recommend in every case, even if you're arriving as part of an organized tour. The freedom to set your own schedule in a park without a shuttle is well worth the extra cost.

In Summary: The Best Route Based on Your Starting Point

Arriving from France? Make Charlotte (CLT) your first choice, rent a car at the airport, and plan on a 2-hour drive via Interstate 77 South. Already in the American Southeast? Columbia is your natural base, 35 to 40 minutes from the visitor center. Either way, a car is essential. There is no shuttle or public transportation to the park.

Before you hit the road, check water levels on the NPS website. Congaree's floodplain forest rises and falls with the river's floods, and a trail that's passable in the morning may be underwater by early afternoon.
