Great Sand Dunes: Three Deep Creek Crossings on Medano Pass Road

Creek crossings 3, 4, and 5 on the Medano Pass Primitive Road are running deep right now, so use caution and bring a capable vehicle.

By Jocelyn Pion,

If you're planning an off-the-beaten-path outing at Great Sand Dunes, here's a heads-up worth your attention. On the Medano Pass Primitive Road, the 4WD-only route, the third, fourth, and fifth creek crossings are running deep right now. This isn't a minor detail. Fording a high creek can drown an engine, sweep away a light vehicle, or strand you far from any cell signal.

So the park is urging caution. Take an honest look at what your vehicle can really handle before you commit to this road, and don't hesitate to turn back if the water looks too high. A capable off-road vehicle with good ground clearance isn't a luxury here, it's the bare minimum. And remember, when in doubt, turning around is always the smart call.

The good news for most visitors is that everything you can reach by paved road stays open as usual. You can easily get to the visitor center, the dunes parking lot, and the campground. In other words, if your plans center on hiking the tallest dunes in North America or wading in Medano Creek near the parking lot, this alert doesn't affect you.

In practice, we'd suggest saving the Medano Pass road for experienced, well-equipped drivers, and holding that option for a time when the water has dropped back down. Check with the visitor center the same day, since mountain creek crossings change fast with snowmelt and thunderstorms.
