Black Canyon of the Gunnison: East Portal Road Closed Until Further Notice

If you're planning a trip to Black Canyon of the Gunnison, there's one logistical detail worth checking before you lock in your plans. East Portal Road is currently closed, and the closure applies to every visitor.

Right now, no one is allowed on the road. Cars, of course, but also bikes and even foot traffic: park officials aren't opening it to anyone until conditions improve. In other words, don't count on walking around the barrier to sneak past on foot, the rule covers every way of getting through.

The park says the reason is weather. Unstable conditions and an uncertain forecast have made the area risky, so park management chose to play it safe and cut off access until the zone is safe for the public again. There's no reopening date at this point. The closure will lift when the weather settles on-site, not on any set schedule.

That changes two things if you like to plan your days down to the hour. First, don't build your day around this particular road while it stays closed. Second, plan to check its status shortly before your visit, because it can reopen as soon as the weather stabilizes.
