Getting to Saguaro: Airports, Access, and Transportation
The short version: The closest airport to Saguaro National Park is Tucson International Airport (TUS), 20 to 35 minutes by car from either district. From France, you'll connect through Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX), about a 2-hour drive from Tucson. Saguaro has one notable logistical advantage: its two districts sit on either side of Tucson, making access easier than at more remote parks.

Tucson International Airport (TUS): The Most Direct Option
Tucson International Airport (TUS) is the go-to airport for Saguaro. The East District is about 12 miles away, while the West District is roughly 19 miles away, a 20- to 35-minute drive depending on traffic. It's a manageable airport with compact terminals and on-site rental cars, so you'll be on the road less than 30 minutes after landing.
For domestic connections, American Airlines, Southwest, Delta, and United operate flights from Los Angeles, Dallas, Denver, and Chicago. There are no direct flights from France to Tucson, however.
Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX): The International Hub
Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX) is the main gateway airport for the American Southwest. Direct flights from Paris-Charles de Gaulle are available and take about 11 hours, making Phoenix the natural arrival point for visitors from France.
Phoenix is about 115 miles north of Tucson, or a 1 hour 45 minute to 2-hour drive south on I-10. The route crosses the Sonoran Desert, and the first wild saguaros appear well before the park boundary. It's a good introduction.
Getting to Saguaro from France: Direct Flight or Connecting Flight
There are no direct flights from Paris to Tucson. The standard route from France takes two steps:
- Paris CDG → Phoenix PHX: A direct flight is available and takes about 11 hours.
- Phoenix → Tucson: Rent a car at the airport and drive 1 hour 45 minutes south on I-10. Since you'll need a car in the park, this is the combination we consistently recommend.
Another option is to connect through Los Angeles (LAX) or Dallas (DFW) if you find lower fares. From LAX, plan on a 1.5-hour domestic flight to Tucson (TUS), or about 10 hours by car via I-10.
For entrance fees and available passes, see our Fees & Passes page.
By Car: Distances and Drive Times from Gateway Cities
A car is essential at Saguaro. No intercity public transportation serves the park, and getting between the two districts without a car is impossible.
| Starting point | Approx. distance | Estimated drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Tucson (downtown) | 9 to 16 miles | 20 to 35 min |
| Phoenix | 115 miles | 1 hr 45 min to 2 hr |
| Flagstaff | 193 miles | 2 hr 45 min |
| Albuquerque | 311 miles | 4 hr 30 min |
| Las Vegas | 454 miles | 6 hr 45 min |
| Los Angeles | 621 miles | 9 hr 30 min |
Watch out for GPS: The National Park Service specifically advises against using mobile navigation apps to find the two districts. Write down the addresses ahead of time (see the next section) and follow road signs instead of relying on automatic rerouting.
Saguaro's Entrances: Two Districts, Two Addresses
Saguaro National Park is divided into two districts separated by the city of Tucson. You can't travel directly from one to the other without crossing the city, so allow 30 to 45 minutes between the two entrances.
West District: Tucson Mountain District
Official address: 2700 N Kinney Rd, Tucson, AZ 85743. This is the most accessible district if you're arriving from Phoenix via I-10. It's home to the Red Hills Visitor Center, Bajada Loop Drive, a partly unpaved scenic loop of about 5.6 miles, and the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum just outside the park.
The roads in the West District, including Golden Gate Road, are passable in an ordinary vehicle in dry weather. After heavy rain, check with the visitor center because some sections may close temporarily.
East District: Rincon Mountain District
Official address: 3693 S Old Spanish Trail, Tucson, AZ 85730. This district is home to Cactus Forest Loop Drive, an entirely paved loop of about 8.1 miles, as well as trailheads leading into the Rincon Mountains. The Saguaro East Visitor Center is at the entrance.
The East District is generally less crowded in the morning. On our last visit, parking was easy to find when the visitor center opened, even during the busy season.
Entrance fees: $25 per vehicle, $20 per motorcycle, and $15 per person entering on foot or by bicycle. The park-specific annual pass costs $45. Our Fees & Passes page also covers the America the Beautiful Pass, which is valid at more than 2,000 federal sites across the United States.
Getting Around Saguaro
Saguaro has no official shuttle, so a car is the only way to cover both districts in one day. Parking at the visitor centers is included with admission. Trailhead parking lots fill up by 8 a.m. on weekends, so plan to arrive early. For internal routes, biking, and trailhead-by-trailhead parking, see our Getting Around page.
Other Options: Organized Tours from Tucson
A few Tucson-based operators offer half-day guided trips in either district, on foot or by 4x4. This is a practical option if you didn't rent a car or if you'd like a local naturalist's perspective on Sonoran Desert wildlife.
There is no regular bus service between downtown Tucson and the park entrances. Tucson's Sun Link streetcar does not serve Saguaro. A rideshare service such as Uber or Lyft can work in a pinch for the East District from downtown, but getting back can be difficult. A car remains the most flexible option. Our Things to Do page lists the guided activities available in both districts.
In Summary: The Best Route Based on Your Starting Point
From France: Fly to Phoenix (PHX), rent a car at the airport, and drive to Tucson in 2 hours on I-10. Then choose your entrance district based on the day's plans.
From Los Angeles: Take a 1.5-hour domestic flight to Tucson (TUS), or make the 10-hour drive via I-10 if you're in the mood for a desert road trip.
From Phoenix: Drive 2 hours south on I-10, with no connection, straight to the Tucson area. It's the ideal option for a weekend in the Sonoran Desert.
