Haleakalā: Kīpahulu Closure Means You'll Need to Adjust Your Plans
The Kīpahulu District is currently closed after heavy rain, so we recommend adjusting this part of your Haleakalā visit.
By Erika Müller,
If your Haleakalā plans include Kīpahulu, you'll need to adjust them for now. The Kīpahulu District is closed to visitors. We recommend leaving this stop off your itinerary for the time being, since it's still unclear when visits can resume.
Heavy rain prompted the closure, and a flood watch is also in effect statewide. That means you can't count on a stop at Kīpahulu when planning your day.

Road access is also disrupted. Hāna Highway is the main route to the district, and landslides and road closures have made travel difficult. We recommend that you don't set out assuming you'll be able to reach the district entrance.
When planning your drive, remember that even if the road is open to traffic, that doesn't mean you can visit Kīpahulu. The district closure still applies, so avoid basing your plans solely on road conditions.
No reopening date has been announced. Visitors will be able to return when conditions allow them to do so safely. If your trip is coming up, we recommend keeping your plans flexible and checking for closure updates before adding Kīpahulu back to your itinerary.
For help planning this part of your trip, see the Haleakalā National Park guide. Keep in mind that this alert concerns Kīpahulu. It doesn't, by itself, mean the entire park is closed.
