Canyonlands: White Rim Road Impassable, Full Loop Cut Off
Rain and flooding have left Canyonlands' White Rim Road impassable. The western stretch is closed, and the full loop is no longer possible.
By Jocelyn Pion,
If you're planning a trip on the famous White Rim Road in Canyonlands, here's some news that changes your plans. Heavy rain and recent flooding have torn up the route, and the bottom line is simple. The White Rim Road is currently impassable. On the ground, that means rockfall, collapsed cutbanks, washouts, mud, and standing water. All of it adds up to obstacles that make driving impossible along much of the route.
In practical terms, the western stretch of the road is closed to all traffic, from Mineral Bottom to west of the White Crack junction. The closure runs at least through October 20, 2026, and there's no guarantee it'll reopen on that exact date. Everything depends on the real condition of the road once the weather clears. So treat this section as out of service until further notice, and check the status before you head out.

Not everything is shut down, though. You can still drive out to White Crack from the eastern side of the White Rim, which leaves a great escape open to properly equipped vehicles. That said, the full loop isn't possible right now. You can't connect the east and west sides as long as the damaged stretch stays closed. For a road trip, that means planning an out-and-back from the east rather than a full-day loop.
This road runs through spectacular rock country, but it demands a true off-road vehicle, plenty of water, and real caution in wet weather. Before you set out, take a few minutes to read the Canyonlands park guide so you can line up your route with current road conditions. And if you're putting together a bigger trip through the region, Canyonlands fits nicely into our road trip itinerary that passes through this park, as long as you adjust that leg for these restrictions.
