Canyonlands Flood Warning: What to Know Before You Drive

A flood warning covered Grand and San Juan counties on October 22, 2026. Here's the advice to keep in mind when driving around Canyonlands.

By Jocelyn Pion,

If you're planning a visit to Canyonlands, keep this driving advice in mind: turn around when you encounter a flooded road. That's the National Weather Service (NWS) recommendation to remember as you plan your drives around the park.

According to the NWS, an official Flood Warning covered Grand and San Juan counties in Utah on October 22, 2026. The weather service announced that the warning would run from 9:46 a.m. to 9:45 p.m. MDT (UTC−6). The announced expiration was October 22 at 9:45 p.m. That window has passed, so it alone can't tell you what conditions you'll encounter on a future visit.

For travelers, the decision is straightforward. Don't cross a road covered by water. The NWS recommendation applies regardless of where that stop falls in your itinerary. We recommend keeping that priority in mind, even if turning around means changing your plans for the day.

The NWS also asks that you report observed flooding to local emergency services or law enforcement, but only when you can do so safely. It recommends asking them to pass the information along to the weather service. Only make a report if it's safe to do so.
