Grand Canyon: Water Restrictions and South Rim Overnight Lodging Closures

If you were planning an overnight stay on the Grand Canyon's South Rim in the next few days, your plans just changed. The park is closing its South Rim overnight lodging starting August 31, and it's putting that same area under Stage 4 water restrictions at noon that day. It all comes down to one thing. Water. A sudden, violent flash flood hit Bright Angel Canyon on August 29, and it did serious damage at the bottom of the canyon.

Among the infrastructure that took a hit is a critical piece, the Transcanyon Waterline. It's the line that pumps water up from the canyon to supply the park. When that artery is damaged, the whole water system wobbles, which is why these measures are in place.
