North Rim: Services End and Closures Begin October 15

According to Unofficial Networks, the Grand Canyon's North Rim is winding down its services as winter approaches. The Backcountry Information Center closes at noon on October 15, 2026, though permits will still be available through the South Rim or Recreation.gov. The General Store shuts its doors the same day at 4 p.m., and the campground the morning of October 16. The gas station has been closed since September 19, so there's no fuel available in the park. The SR-67 entrance gate closes November 30 at sunset, or whenever the first major snowfall hits, whichever comes first. The North Kaibab Trail remains closed after the flash flood on August 29.

Grand Canyon: The North Rim Shifts to Fall Operations October 15

Two scenic North Rim roads close from October 15 to November 3, 2026 for road repairs. Here's what to know before you go.

If you're planning a Grand Canyon trip this fall, one schedule change is worth your attention. The park is shifting its northern side, the North Rim, into reduced operations starting October 15, 2026. That seasonal transition comes with a targeted closure of two roads that viewpoint lovers rely on.

Here's the key detail. Cape Royal Road and Point Imperial Road close from sunset on October 15 through sunrise on November 3, 2026. These two roads lead to some of the finest overlooks on the North Rim, and shutting them down is no small thing if you were hoping to photograph the canyon from those points. The reason is clear. Crews are tackling road repair and rehabilitation work in partnership with the Federal Highway Administration.

So why close the roads completely instead of running alternating traffic? Because the work requires a safe environment for the crews while they finish these high-priority repairs. So plan on skipping both routes during this window, even in the middle of the day.

Here's what this means for your plans. The North Rim is still the wildest and quietest way into the Grand Canyon, but it's also the most exposed to the seasons. If your visit falls between mid-October and November 3, cross Cape Royal and Point Imperial off your itinerary and turn your attention to the other overlooks still open on this side of the park.
