How to Get to Channel Islands: Airports, Access & Transportation

By Jocelyn Pion · Data: National Park Service · ← Complete guide Channel Islands

Channel Islands National Park surprises visitors who arrive without doing their homework. There is no entrance station beside a road. The park consists of five islands off Southern California, and the only way to set foot on them is by boat or small plane. Ventura is the required mainland starting point, a small coastal city about 60 miles northwest of Los Angeles. The most convenient airport is Los Angeles International (LAX), about a 1.5-hour drive from Ventura.

Where to Land: Which Airport for Channel Islands

The Closest Regional Airport: Oxnard (OXR)

Oxnard Airport is less than 15 minutes by car from Ventura Harbor, where all boat trips to the islands depart. In theory, it is the ideal option. In practice, service is very limited and almost entirely domestic, with few flights from major U.S. cities. It is worth considering if you are arriving on a domestic connection from a national hub.

The International Hub: Los Angeles (LAX)

For visitors coming from France or Europe, Los Angeles International Airport is the natural gateway. Several airlines offer year-round nonstop flights from Paris-Charles de Gaulle to LAX. From the airport, take Highway 101 North toward Ventura. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic, which gets heavier late in the day.

Another good option is Santa Barbara Airport (SBA), about 45 minutes north of Ventura. It offers domestic flights from several U.S. cities and works well for a connection from LAX or for travelers arriving from San Francisco.

Getting to Channel Islands from France: Nonstop or Connecting Flight

Several airlines, including Air France, United, and Delta depending on the season, operate nonstop flights from Paris-CDG to LAX. The flight takes about 11.5 hours. Travelers from regional French cities will need to connect, most often in Paris, Amsterdam, or Madrid.

Once you land at LAX, Highway 101 North follows the Pacific for much of the drive to Ventura. It is a pleasant preview of the trip.

Driving to Ventura: Distances from Gateway Cities

Ventura is the required mainland starting point. Here are estimated drive times from the region's main cities, excluding periods of heavy traffic:

Starting city Distance Estimated time
Los Angeles ~60 miles 1.5 to 2 hours
Santa Barbara ~34 miles 45 minutes to 1 hour
San Diego ~174 miles 2.75 to 3.5 hours
Las Vegas ~280 miles 4.5 hours
San Francisco ~360 miles 5.5 to 6 hours

Parking in Ventura: the park's Robert J. Lagomarsino Visitor Center is at 1901 Spinnaker Drive in the harbor district. Paid parking is available right by the Island Packers docks. Plan to arrive 30 minutes before your boat departs.

Getting to the Islands: Boat and Plane

This is where Channel Islands differs from almost every other U.S. national park. To set foot on the islands, you have to take a boat or a plane. There are no bridges and no road connection across the water. That is precisely what has preserved these islands.

Island Packers: The Park's Official Boats

Island Packers is the National Park Service's official concessioner for island transportation. Departures leave from Ventura Harbor, and some trips to certain islands also leave from the Port of Oxnard. Travel times vary by destination:

  • Anacapa (the closest island to the mainland): about 1 hour
  • Santa Cruz (eastern portion, Scorpion Anchorage): about 1.5 to 2 hours
  • Santa Rosa: about 3 hours
  • San Miguel: about 4 hours
  • Santa Barbara Island: about 3.5 hours

Booking ahead is strongly recommended, especially for spring and summer weekends. Trips can be canceled in rough seas, so check your trip status the day before departure. Some groups have found themselves without a boat on a windy morning, suitcases in hand on the dock.

Channel Islands Aviation: The Plane Option for Santa Rosa

Channel Islands Aviation offers small-plane flights from Camarillo Airport (CMA), about 20 minutes from Ventura. The flight takes about 25 minutes. Capacity is very limited, so book several weeks ahead, especially if you are planning to camp overnight on Santa Rosa.

The Park's "Entrances": One Island, One Access Point

There is no traditional entrance station like the ones at Yellowstone or Zion. Each island is its own access point, and the island you choose determines your entire itinerary:

  • Anacapa: ideal for a first visit or a day trip from the mainland. Cliffs, a lighthouse, and snorkeling.
  • Santa Cruz: the largest and most versatile island. Hiking, sea kayaking, and camping at Scorpion Ranch.
  • Santa Rosa: wilder scenery, frequent winds, isolated beaches, and endemic island foxes.
  • San Miguel: the most exposed to the elements and best suited to experienced visitors. An impressive colony of sea lions in season.
  • Santa Barbara Island: the smallest and most isolated island to the south, perfect for watching sea lions.

Getting Around the Park: On Foot and by Kayak

Once you are on an island, you can get around only on foot or by sea kayak. Your return boat is the one you reserved. There is no on-demand shuttle, and do not underestimate the walking time needed to reach the dock. The Channel Islands Transportation Guide breaks down the options island by island.

Other Options: Tours and Public Transportation

Several agencies offer day trips from Los Angeles or Santa Barbara that include ground transportation to Ventura and the boat trip. This is a practical option if you are visiting without a rental car.

By public transportation from Los Angeles, Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner reaches Ventura in about 1.5 hours from Los Angeles Union Station. From Ventura station, the harbor is about a 20-minute walk or a short taxi or rideshare trip away. Ventura County Transit buses provide additional local service between the station and the harbor area.

In Summary: Your Route to the Park Based on Where You Start

From France: fly from Paris-CDG to LAX, about 11.5 hours nonstop, then drive along Highway 101 North to Ventura, 1.5 to 2 hours. Spend the night in town and take an Island Packers boat the next morning. This is the classic route.

From Los Angeles: drive 1.5 hours to Ventura Harbor, then take a boat to Anacapa or eastern Santa Cruz. A day trip from L.A. is entirely doable.

From San Francisco: drive the coastal route for 5.5 to 6 hours, or take a domestic flight from SFO to SBA and then drive 45 minutes. Add a stop in Santa Barbara to make the trip worthwhile.

Whatever your starting point, Ventura Harbor is the park's true gateway. Book your boat trip first, then plan everything else around it. For an overview of the visit, see our Complete Channel Islands Guide.
