When to Visit Acadia: Best Times, Weather, and Seasons
The quick answer: September and the first half of October are the ideal window for visiting Acadia. Temperatures stay mild, reaching 70°F, the forests of Mount Desert Island turn red and gold, and parking lots no longer feel like traffic jams. If you have to travel during summer because of the school calendar or a tight schedule, aim for the second half of June. The park is fully up and running, and the major trails aren't crowded yet.
Acadia's Climate Month by Month

Acadia Season by Season
Winter (December to March): Have the Park Mostly to Yourself, If You Come Prepared

The park stays open year-round, but winter in Acadia feels like another world. Temperatures can drop to 14°F, and the park averages about 73 inches of snow over the season, from November through April. Cadillac Summit Road closes after the first major snowfalls. The carriage roads, on the other hand, turn into popular cross-country ski and snowshoe routes for regular visitors.
Wildlife becomes harder to spot, and most facilities, including Hulls Cove Visitor Center and Jordan Pond House, close for the season. This is the time for solitude and pristine landscapes. Bring waterproof shoes with removable traction devices such as microspikes, dress in layers, and check trail conditions every time before you head out.
Spring (April to May): A Quiet Awakening

Spring arrives slowly in Maine. In April, temperatures range from 34°F to 50°F, and trails are often muddy or still snow-covered at higher elevations. In May, vegetation comes back to life and wildlife becomes active again. Peregrine falcons return to nest on the cliffs, so some exposed trails, including the Precipice Trail, may close temporarily to protect them. Check NPS alerts before you leave. Closures can last several weeks.
Crowds remain light, which makes it a good time for trails to the summit of Cadillac Mountain and the coastal paths. Lodging rates are at their lowest. The downside is that some facilities haven't returned to their full schedules yet.
Summer (June to August): Great Weather, Big Crowds

June marks the start of peak season. Temperatures climb as high as 81°F in July and August, and sometimes higher during heat waves. Coastal sea fog is common on June mornings and is part of the appeal of the Maine coast.
July and August account for most of the year's visitors. Parking lots at popular sites such as Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, and Jordan Pond fill by 9 a.m. The timed entry reservation system is active at high-traffic areas. Without an advance reservation through Recreation.gov, you may be turned away even if you have a valid pass.
If you have to choose summer, our recommendation is the second half of June. Temperatures are already very comfortable, around 72°F, lines haven't reached their worst yet, and all the trails are open.
Fall (September to Mid-October): The Golden Window

Fall is our favorite season in Acadia. Crowds drop sharply after Labor Day, the first Monday in September. Temperatures stay mild through mid-October, ranging from 50°F to 70°F, the low-angle light brings out the pink granite coast, and the forests gradually turn red, orange, and yellow.
Peak foliage usually arrives between late September and mid-October. During this period, Cadillac Mountain offers one of the earliest sunrises on the continental East Coast, from October through March. Plan to arrive around 4 a.m., and expect clear skies and chilly temperatures. About 40 people often share the moment with you, which is still quite reasonable for such a popular spot. After mid-October, overnight freezes set in and the weather becomes less predictable.
Crowds: When to Avoid the Rush
Acadia ranks among the ten most visited national parks in the United States, with about 4 million visitors a year. Most of that pressure falls within a very short window.
| Time of year | Crowd level |
|---|---|
| July to mid-August | Extreme: reservations essential |
| Second half of June | Busy but manageable |
| September | Moderate to busy, easing after Labor Day |
| October | Moderate, with peaks on foliage weekends |
| November to March | Low to very low |
| April to May | Low |
Our practical advice: no matter the season, get to popular sites such as Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, and Jordan Pond before 8 a.m. or after 4 p.m. The free Island Explorer bus serves key spots throughout the park and is a serious alternative to driving in summer. You'll spend less time worrying about parking, and it can often get you there faster.
Reservations and Access by Season
Acadia uses a timed entry reservation system during peak season at high-traffic areas. Without a reservation for those time windows, you won't be allowed in, even if you have a valid pass.
Time slots open in advance on Recreation.gov, several weeks ahead depending on the area. In practice, check availability as soon as your dates are confirmed. In July and August, slots disappear within a few hours. The timed entry reservation itself costs $6, not including the entrance fee.
Standard admission costs $35 per vehicle, or $20 per person on foot or by bicycle. The park's annual pass costs $70. For complete details on the procedures and opening dates for time slots, see the Acadia access guide.
The Best Time to Visit on a Budget
Lodging rates in and around Bar Harbor closely follow the crowd curve.
July and August bring the highest prices of the year. Hotels, motels, and campgrounds fill up quickly, and rates reflect that. June and September offer much better value, with far more availability. Fall, especially October, brings a slight price increase on foliage weekends. If that's when you want to go, book early.
Winter has the lowest rates, but options are limited, and many properties close for the off-season. Check opening dates before you lock in your trip. To compare options and price ranges, see where to stay around Acadia and the park's camping guide.
When to Visit Based on Your Interests
Hiking: the second half of June or September. Temperatures are ideal for Acadia's rocky trails, including the Precipice Trail, Beehive Trail, and Ocean Path. Avoid July's heat for exposed climbs. Heat and crowds seriously detract from the experience. The Acadia hiking guide breaks hikes down by difficulty and area.
Wildlife: May for peregrine falcons and migrating birds; early September for whale, seal, and porpoise excursions from Bar Harbor. In winter, seals and sea ducks gather in the coastal coves. The Acadia wildlife guide covers the species to look for and where to find them.
Photography: fall, without question. September and October light on the pink granite, fall colors, and sunrises over Cadillac Mountain make the perfect combination. The Acadia map will help you find the best photo spots.
Families: July is the most convenient, with all facilities open, Island Explorer running, and Jordan Pond House accessible. The second half of August is a little quieter and is also a good option. Find all the family-specific advice on our Acadia with Kids page.
Tight budget: May or early June. Low rates, light crowds, and the park coming fully back to life. Bring extra layers for chilly evenings.
In Summary: The Best Time for Each Type of Trip
| Traveler profile | Ideal time |
|---|---|
| Hiking without crowds | Second half of June or September |
| Foliage and photography | Late September to mid-October |
| Land and marine wildlife | May or early September |
