Zion Reopens the Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway Oct. 9 After a Rockfall
The scenic Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway, closed since Sept. 30 after a rockfall, reopens to visitor traffic on Friday, Oct. 9, 2026.

Good news if you're planning a trip to Zion this fall: access to the Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway is back. The road reopens to visitor traffic starting Friday, Oct. 9, 2026, after several days of closure.
Here's what happened. On Sept. 30, 2026, a large rock formation collapsed onto a stretch of this road. The fall damaged the roadway and blocked the route, forcing the park to close a portion of the Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway while crews worked. During that time, travelers who'd counted on taking this route had to rework their plans.

There's a reason this road matters so much. It's one of the park's most dramatic drives, the one that links the main canyon to the eastern side of Zion through a historic tunnel and a run of sandstone scenery. Plenty of itineraries put it at the heart of a visit. So its closure was no small thing. It cut an essential link in seeing the park by car.
What this means for you is simple. If your trip falls on or after Oct. 9, the full drive is open again. Still, we'd suggest staying alert once you're there. After a rockfall this big, occasional traffic adjustments can linger, and fall weather has a big say on these mountain roads.
Before you lock in your plans, take a minute to revisit the Zion park guide to line up your stops and timing. And if you're dreaming of going beyond Zion, take a look at our road trip itinerary that runs through this park, built to string together the great sites of the American West without rushing.
