Rocky Mountain's Old Fall River Road Closes to Cars October 6, 2026
The mountain road switches to its winter schedule, closed to vehicles in early October with two maintenance windows when no one can get through.
By Jocelyn Pion,
If you had the Old Fall River Road area on your list this fall, grab your calendar. According to The Denver Post, this mountain road closes to vehicles starting October 6, 2026 and shifts into its winter setup. So cars are done for the season on this stretch.
Then two rounds of maintenance work lock the road down for everyone. Again per The Denver Post, it's closed to all uses from October 6 to 9, then again from October 13 to 16, with no cars, no bikes, no walkers, and no leashed dogs allowed. If you're building a trip around this area, cross those two windows off your list.

In between, a short breather. From October 10 to 12, the road reopens to bikes, pedestrians, and leashed pets, according to the same outlet. The winter reopening works the same way. Starting October 17, those three uses are allowed again, this time for the rest of the cold season.
One detail matters if you're coming to ride or walk your dog. Here's the rule to remember. You stay on the roadway from one end of the route to the other. The side paths that branch off aren't open to you in this setup, whether you're on a bike or with an animal. So plan a ride that follows the road, with no detours onto the nearby trails.
It pays to plan ahead, because this park draws a crowd. According to Fort Collins Country Radio, Rocky Mountain topped 4.1 million visitors in 2025, making it the sixth most-visited park in the country.
