Lassen Volcanic: Snow Closes Highway 89 to Through Traffic
Highway 89 is closed to through traffic at Lassen Volcanic, but visitors can still drive a short distance into the park from the northwest and southwest entrances.
If you planned to drive through Lassen Volcanic, you'll need to adjust your route. Highway 89 is currently closed to through traffic across the park. Accumulating snow and fallen rock have prompted the temporary closure. As you plan your drive, keep in mind that entering at either end of the road doesn't mean you can reach the other side of the park.
You can still enter the park through the northwest entrance. The road remains open for 1 mile to Loomis Plaza, where you'll reach the closure. That's as far as you can drive if you're arriving from this side. You can't continue through the park on Highway 89.

The southwest entrance also remains accessible. From this side, you can drive 1 mile to Sulphur Works. The road closes there. When planning your visit, remember that each entrance provides access to a short stretch of road, with no open connection between them along the park road.
We recommend choosing your entrance based on which side you'd like to visit. If your day depended on arriving through one entrance and leaving through the other, you'll need to revise your plans. Being able to enter the park doesn't mean the road is open along its entire length.
The available information gives no reopening date. Through traffic will resume once conditions improve. We recommend keeping your plans flexible while this restriction remains in effect. See the Lassen Volcanic park guide to plan your visit around these access limits.
