LeConte Lodge: Morning Closures October 6-9 for Helicopter Flights

From October 6 to 9, 2026, LeConte Lodge and its services close each morning from 9 a.m. to noon, though the summit trails stay open.

By David Sanchez,

Planning to hike up Mount Le Conte this week? One scheduling detail is going to shape your morning. According to AD HOC NEWS, LeConte Lodge will be closed each morning from 9 a.m. to noon, October 6 through 9, 2026 for helicopter operations at the summit. If the weather turns, the work could slide to October 10, 11, and 12, again per the same source.

Here's the practical fallout. During these flight windows, everything at the lodge shuts down. The store, restrooms, water, and food service will be unavailable in the morning, AD HOC NEWS reports. So bring your own water and something to snack on, and take care of any practical needs before 9 or after noon.

Good news for hikers. The trails and overlooks around the summit stay open. Just expect short waits. According to AD HOC NEWS, brief pauses are possible at three crossing points while a flight is underway. Lower down, traffic may also slow on US 441 (Newfound Gap Road) near Oconaluftee Overlook. Leave yourself a little room in the day's plans.

Two more things deserve your attention before you head out. Again per AD HOC NEWS, Mount Le Conte Shelter is closed because of bear activity; composting privies are still available on site. And here's a reminder that can get expensive. According to WLOS and foxcarolina.com, harvesting ginseng, like any plant in the park, is prohibited and carries a fine of up to $5,000 and/or six months in jail.

These closures are temporary. AD HOC NEWS says a replacement building is expected for the 2027 season. To plan the rest of your trip, including access and the must-see stops, lean on the Great Smoky Mountains park guide.
