Grand Teton: Black Bear Euthanized After Being Fed by Visitors

A black bear habituated to human food was euthanized near Delta Lake, according to Scripps News. Here's what it means for your trip.

By Victoria Boissonade,

Here's some bad news that drives home a rule we repeat over and over before any trip out West. According to Scripps News, a black bear was euthanized in the remote backcountry around Delta Lake, in Grand Teton National Park, after being darted on site.

The cause was no accident. Per Scripps News, the animal had come to associate people with a food reward, a behavior biologists call food-conditioning. In other words, careless visitors who left food lying around or got too close turned a wild bear into a dangerous one.

So why not just relocate it? That question's already been settled. Again according to Scripps News, no part of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem offered both enough food and low enough human activity to release it there. A translocation would have moved the problem, not fixed it.

The first reports go back to 2026, with the situation escalating and the euthanasia carried out during the week of September 18, 2026, Scripps News notes. Over the same stretch, several citations were issued to visitors for approaching wildlife or for breaking food-storage rules.

Here's what to take away for your own trip. Always store all food in the containers the park provides, including coolers, bear boxes, and approved containers, and never leave anything unattended, even for a few minutes. Never approach a bear for a photo, keep your distance, and stay on marked trails. These habits don't just protect your safety. They very literally decide whether these animals live or die.

To plan a trip that plays by the rules, everything's laid out in the Grand Teton park guide, and you can put the stop in its regional context with our road trip itinerary that runs through this park.
