Denali: Pretty Rocks Bridge Complete, West End of the Road Set to Reopen

If you've been dreaming of reaching the west end of Denali, a big step just fell into place. On September 3, 2026, the National Park Service, the Federal Highway Administration, and their partners cut the ribbon on the new Pretty Rocks Bridge, deep in Denali National Park and Preserve. The bridge was the missing piece of the project that began after the Pretty Rocks landslide forced part of the Denali Park Road to close in August 2021.

Why this matters for your trip. Since that closure, the only road through the park has been cut off well before its end, and the whole western half has stayed out of reach, whether by car or by shuttle. Finishing the bridge clears the way for public access to return to that wild western stretch, the one many visitors came all that way to find at the end of the road.

We're staying cautious about the timeline. The ribbon-cutting marks a major milestone, not the full reopening of the road all the way to its end. The park calls it a step that sets up the return of access, without promising a date for general traffic. So before you build an itinerary out to the west side of the park, check the road's actual opening status for your travel window. Finishing work and seasonal conditions still call the shots.
