Voyageurs: Campfires Allowed Again Parkwide

As of August 24, 2026, campfire restrictions have been lifted across Voyageurs National Park.

By David Sanchez,

Good news for your evenings by the water: campfires are allowed again throughout Voyageurs National Park. On August 24, 2026, in the mid-afternoon, the National Park Service lifted the restrictions that had been in place until then. If you're planning a trip to this wild corner of Minnesota, that's a real change for your itinerary.

The reason is simple. The weather has cooled off and the wildfire risk has dropped sharply. Summer often brings dry stretches when a single spark can turn dangerous, which pushes officials to ban open flames. Now that cooler conditions are back, that precaution is no longer necessary, and campfires are on the table again.

This decision goes beyond the park itself. It lines up with steps taken at the same time by the U.S. Forest Service in the neighboring Superior National Forest, along with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. In other words, the whole region gets the green light to light a fire all at once, which makes things easier if your route stitches together several of these areas.

In practical terms, you can once again plan a fire in the designated spots, whether you're camping on a boat-accessible island or near one of the big lakes that define the park. Still, keep the basics in mind: a fire that stays watched, fully out before you sleep, and water within reach. These rules hold even when no ban is in effect.

This kind of measure changes fast, depending on the weather and how dry things get. We recommend checking the situation right before you head out, since a new heat wave can bring the restrictions back. To plan the rest of your visit, including access, the best times to go, and things to do on the water, you'll find it all in the Voyageurs park guide.
