Mesa Verde Flood Warning Applied Only to October 23
The National Weather Service warning for Montezuma, Colorado, covered October 23. Here’s what visitors to Mesa Verde should keep in mind.
By Jocelyn Pion,
If you're planning a visit to Mesa Verde, first check the dates. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the flood warning applied to October 23, 2026. The agency listed a start time of 12:01 a.m. and an end time of noon MDT (UTC−6). That period has passed, so these dates don't support describing the warning as still in effect.
The NWS identified the affected area as Montezuma, Colorado. As you plan, we recommend treating this weather information separately from the information you need to visit the park. The available notice doesn't specify any road closures at Mesa Verde. It also doesn't confirm access conditions after the warning expired. You can't use it as assurance that your route will be clear.

The NWS offers clear advice for drivers: turn around when you encounter a flooded road. If you're driving to the park, keep that instruction in mind whenever water covers the road ahead. We recommend following that advice on your trip even though this warning has expired.
The NWS also asks you to report observed flooding to local emergency services or law enforcement, but only when you can do so safely. Ask them to pass the information along to the NWS. Your safety comes first when reporting flooding.
To plan the rest of your visit, see the Mesa Verde National Park guide. Keep the distinction clear, though. The dates reported here describe this specific warning, not the current conditions on the roads you'll take.
