Cuyahoga Valley: Parking Lots Closing in Rotation, October 5-16

Several Cuyahoga Valley parking lots will close for a few hours each for maintenance between October 5 and 16. Here's where and when.

By David Sanchez,

If you're planning a trip to Cuyahoga Valley in the first half of October, there's a small logistics detail worth knowing about. The park is running a string of maintenance projects on its parking lots, and each affected lot closes only briefly, no more than a day or two. Nothing that holds up the rest of the park. Only the lots listed below are involved, one after another, on a staggered schedule. You'll find the full rundown for the area in the Cuyahoga Valley park guide.

Here's the order so you don't pull up to a closed gate. The Frazee House and Jaite/Headquarters lots close October 5 and 6. Next come the East Rim Trailhead and Ira Trailhead lots, October 6 and 7, then the Canal Exploration Center, October 7 and 8. The second wave lands the following week. The Station Road Bridge Trailhead lot is closed October 13 through 15, and the Lock 39 Trailhead lot October 15 and 16.

In practice, this mostly affects trailheads and a few visitor sites. If one of them is on your plan that day, grab a nearby lot or push that stop back a day. The park's other access points stay open as usual throughout the work, so simply reshuffling the order of your route is usually enough to fit everything in.

One last thing before you lock in your times. This schedule can shift if the weather gets involved, since crews need decent conditions to work on the pavement. A badly timed rain shower can move a closure up, delay it, or cut it short. So here's our advice: on the morning of your visit, check the status of the lot you're aiming for rather than trusting a schedule set a few days earlier. With that one habit, this work will barely change your day in the valley.
