Where to Stay Near Gateway Arch: St. Louis Hotels
Gateway Arch National Park occupies St. Louis's Riverfront in Missouri, along the Mississippi River. It's an urban national park: the grounds, underground museum, and Arch itself make up the site, with no lodging inside the park. In the Park or Outside It?
Unlike Yellowstone or Zion, Gateway Arch has no lodge or hotel on its grounds. That option simply doesn't exist here. All lodging is in the city. If you're planning a longer trip and want to compare different lodging options, the Gateway Arch lodging guide gives you the key information. At Gateway Arch, you can go straight to the St. Louis neighborhoods.
In-Park Lodging: What You Need to Know
The NPS doesn't operate any hotel concession on the Gateway Arch grounds. Access to the grounds and museum, the Museum of Westward Expansion, is free. The Tram Ride to the Top costs $19 and requires a timed entry reservation. Some Downtown hotels sit right against the park boundary. You can step out of the lobby and onto the grounds, which is about as close as you can get to staying inside an urban monument like this one.
Where to Stay in St. Louis: Neighborhoods Near the Arch
St. Louis has several thousand hotel rooms within a 20-minute walk or drive of the Arch. Three areas stand out, depending on your budget and plans.
Downtown and Riverfront: The Most Immersive Option
Downtown and Riverfront make up the area immediately around the Arch. You'll find major chains there, including Hyatt, Marriott, Drury, and Hilton, often with views of the Mississippi River or the grounds. The advantage is real. You can walk to the first 9 a.m. tram without a car or shuttle.
On our last visit, we requested an east-facing room at a Riverfront hotel. Sunrise behind the 630 feet of stainless steel was an unexpected highlight. It's one of the few urban views that lives up to its promise.
Here are a few practical points to keep in mind. Downtown is home to Busch Stadium, where the St. Louis Cardinals play baseball, just three blocks from the Arch. On home-game nights, hotel rates rise and restaurants fill up. Check the Cardinals' schedule before choosing your dates if you want to avoid paying a premium.
Typical range: $130 to $260 per night for a standard room during the high season, from June through August.
Central West End and Midtown: The St. Louis Neighborhood That Stays Lively
Central West End, or CWE, and Midtown are about 15 to 20 minutes west of Downtown by Lyft or car. Hotels there are generally $30 to $50 cheaper per night for a comparable level of comfort. CWE has a selection of neighborhood restaurants and independent cafés that easily hold their own against Downtown.
Forest Park is another reason to choose this area. This 5,000-acre city park, about 7.7 square miles, is home to the Saint Louis Zoo, which has free admission, the Saint Louis Art Museum, whose permanent collections are free, and the Saint Louis Science Center. If your plans include a day away from Gateway Arch, staying in CWE saves you a trip back Downtown before heading to Forest Park.
Typical range: $90 to $180 per night, year-round.
Clayton: The Choice for Travelers With a Car
Clayton is the business district in St. Louis's western suburbs, about 20 minutes from the Arch. Its hotels, including Marriott, Sheraton, and boutique hotels, primarily target business travelers and lower their rates significantly on weekends. If you have a rental car and Gateway Arch is one stop on a Missouri or Illinois road trip, Clayton offers good value without the Riverfront premium.
One thing you shouldn't overlook is parking in Downtown St. Louis. Public parking costs $20 to $35 per day. Some hotels include parking in their rate, which can make a real difference for travelers with a car. Check that line item when you book.
How Many Nights Should You Plan for Gateway Arch?
A full day is enough for the Tram Ride to the Top, the Museum of Westward Expansion, and a visit to the Old Courthouse. Book the first available 9 a.m. time slot. A second night gives you time for Forest Park or an early-morning walk on the grounds, before school groups arrive. After two nights, you're really exploring St. Louis as a city. The Gateway Arch itinerary guide can help you plan around your overall schedule.
When to Book and What to Pay
High season, June through August. Average temperatures range from 75 to 81°F, crowds peak, and Riverfront hotel rates are high. Book two to three months ahead, especially for Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day. Cardinals home-game weekends bring additional mini-peaks to watch for.
Shoulder season, April through May and September through October. This is the window we prefer. Temperatures range from 54 to 75°F, crowds are moderate, and rates fall somewhere in the middle. St. Louis skies are clear 60 to 63 percent of the time during this period, according to NOAA data, and the Mississippi River is at its best in the fall.
Low season, November through March. The cold can be sharp, with an average daily temperature around 30°F in January. The Arch stays open year-round except on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day. Downtown hotel rates regularly drop below $90 on weeknights. If budget matters more than weather, this is the time to go.

Our Recommendation for Different Travelers
Full immersion, comfortable budget. Stay Downtown or on the Riverfront, and request an east-facing room or a river view. Book the 9 a.m. tram and have coffee overlooking the Mississippi River before the groups arrive.
Best balance of comfort and price. Stay in Central West End. It's a 15-minute Lyft ride, saves you $40 to $50 per night, and puts Forest Park within walking distance the next day.
A road trip with a St. Louis stop. Choose Clayton on weekdays and Downtown if you're arriving on a weekend with lower rates. Either way, check whether parking is included before confirming your reservation.
