The best-served airport nearby is El Paso International (ELP), in Texas, 152 miles from the visitor center, about a 2.5-hour drive. Where to Fly: Which Airport for Carlsbad Caverns

The Nearest Regional Airport

Cavern City Air Terminal (CNM) is in Carlsbad, New Mexico, 28 miles from the park entrance. American Airlines operates a few flights from Dallas/Fort Worth. It looks convenient on paper, but flights are limited and fares are often less competitive. Keep it in mind if you find a reasonably priced nonstop connection from your U.S. hub.

Major International Hubs

El Paso International Airport (ELP) is the standard choice. Located 152 miles from the visitor center, about 2.5 hours via US Highway 62/180, it offers nonstop flights from Dallas, Houston, Phoenix, Los Angeles, and Denver. All the major rental car companies operate there, with a much wider vehicle selection than you'll find in Carlsbad.

About 186 miles away, a 3-hour drive, Midland International Air and Space Port (MAF) in Texas is an alternative if your road trip also includes Big Bend or Lubbock. For a New Mexico itinerary that includes Albuquerque or Santa Fe, Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ) is worth considering despite being 292 miles from the park.

Getting to Carlsbad Caverns from France: Nonstop or Connecting Flight

There are no nonstop flights between France and El Paso. The standard route is a transatlantic flight from Paris-CDG to a U.S. hub, followed by a domestic flight to ELP.

The most common connections are Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) on American Airlines or Air France, with a 50-minute connection to ELP; Houston-IAH on Air France or United, with a 55-minute connection; and Atlanta (ATL) on Delta. From Lyon, Bordeaux, or Marseille, add another connection in Paris or Amsterdam.

Plan on 13 to 16 hours of travel from door to door from Paris. We recommend arriving in El Paso the day before so you don't have to drive tired on US Highway 62/180 late in the day. To plan your overall trip budget, see our Rates & Passes page.

By Car: Distances and Drive Times from Gateway Cities

A car is the only way to reach and explore the park freely. Your GPS will guide you to White's City, at the intersection of US Highway 62/180 and New Mexico Highway 7, followed by 6.8 miles of scenic switchbacks to the visitor center.

Starting point Distance Estimated drive time
Carlsbad, NM 28 miles 35 min
El Paso, TX 152 miles 2 hr 30 min
Albuquerque, NM 292 miles 4 hr 30 min
San Antonio, TX 382 miles 5 hr 45 min
Phoenix, AZ 510 miles 7 hr 45 min
Dallas, TX 516 miles 8 hr

Drive times are estimates, excluding stops and assuming normal traffic conditions.

The road from El Paso runs alongside the plains of the Chihuahuan Desert. Driving is easy, the landscape is repetitive, and gas stations are scarce. Fill up before leaving the city, and keep water in the car.

If you're adding Carlsbad Caverns to a longer itinerary, our Region and Road Trip guides suggest routes connecting to White Sands, Guadalupe Mountains, or Big Bend.

Carlsbad Caverns Entrances

The park has just one main access road, but two distinct visitor areas reached from different points along US Highway 62/180.

Main entrance (visitor center): From US Highway 62/180, turn north at White's City onto New Mexico Highway 7. The road climbs 6.8 miles along the cliffside, with views of the Guadalupe Escarpment. The scenery starts before you even head underground.

Slaughter Canyon Cave: This second cave in the park is reached by a partly unpaved road that branches off US Highway 62/180 about 3.7 miles before White's City. All tours are ranger-led and require a separate reservation. Our Carlsbad Caverns guide explains the process and schedule.

Timed entry reservation: Since 2022, access to the Natural Entrance Trail and Big Room requires a timed entry reservation through recreation.gov, with a $1 service fee in addition to the entrance fee. During the busy season, morning time slots sometimes sell out several weeks in advance. Take care of this before you leave, not when you arrive.

Getting Around the Park: Car, Elevator, and Parking

Carlsbad Caverns has no internal shuttle or bus service. For park roads, parking, and elevator access, see all the details in the Getting Around Carlsbad Caverns guide.

Other Options: Tours and Public Transportation

There are no public buses or trains. The park is completely outside the public transportation network. No regular service connects the city of Carlsbad, New Mexico, with the visitor center.

Agencies offer organized full-day tours from El Paso or Albuquerque, including transportation, a guide, and admission. This works if you want to avoid renting a car, but time in the park drops to 3 or 4 hours, which is tight if you want to tour Big Room at an easy pace and enjoy Desert Loop Road.

In Summary: The Best Route Based on Your Starting Point

From France, the best route is straightforward: Paris-CDG → Dallas or Houston → El Paso (ELP) → rental car → 2.5-hour drive. Arrive the day before and stay in El Paso or Carlsbad, New Mexico. Our Where to Stay page lists the best-located accommodations for different budgets and itineraries.

Already in the United States? Carlsbad Caverns fits naturally into a road trip between El Paso, 2.5 hours to the southwest, and Albuquerque, 4.5 hours to the north. Our complete Carlsbad Caverns guide helps you build your sightseeing itinerary once you're there.
